Four major exhibitions are happening over the summer holidays

For a dose of art, cultural experiences, coffee and the opportunity to get into the outdoors, the lakeside Museum of Art and Culture in Lake Macquarie is a must-visit over the summer holidays.

With four major exhibitions planned over the summer holidays, events, workshops, art classes, and loads of school holiday activities there is something for everyone.

Kicking off MAC’s busy Summer of activity is Body Language, a National Gallery of Australia touring exhibition.

Body Language

An exhibition for all the family, Body Language explores the iconography of language as expressed through symbols and patterns and includes works that explore these themes.

‘For many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island people, identity is a source of strength and resilience and there are many ways in which they identify: what they believe in, how they look, how they feel and how they see themselves in society,’ Kelli Cole, Curator.

Cultural Celebration Day - Exhibition Opening: Body Language

Get along to the opening of the Body Language exhibition this weekend with the event starting with a Smoking Ceremony at 10:30am. Bring your kids to learn the Awabakal language through song and dance and try some local bush tucker with Redhead based Oz Tukka.

Lake Art Prize 2020 Finalist Exhibition

Launched in August, the biennial art prize was open to artists Australia-wide and offers a total acquisitive prize pool of $25,000. 42 artworks by 47 artists have been selected for the finalist exhibition, with the winner to be announced on 11 December. Artists, working across all mediums, were invited to submit works which reflect on the theme 'Where there is Water'.

The Lake Mac Art Prize - Opening Day

To celebrate the opening of the inaugural Lake Art Prize 2020 you are invited to view the exhibition and the art in the Sculpture Park. Bring your picnic basket, your friends and experience the array of activities including En plein air (Self-directed), En plein air for kids and Shibori fabric dye workshop. Entry is free.

Art in Your Community – Water

MAC is sitting on the largest saltwater lake in the country; we live near some of the most beautiful beaches in Australia. Water is crucial to survival. In this exhibition, MAC invited creatives to submit 2D works inspired by the artists’ relationship to water.

First Class 20

Now in its 13th year, First Class is a much-anticipated annual exhibition project celebrating the high calibre of work produced by students from the Hunter and Central Coast regions.

First Class 20 is selected from nominated Higher School Certificate Visual Arts submissions produced in 2020 and curated around a theme that emerged from the selection process. Curators Helen Willis and Melody Jones have noticed concepts around the environment, family, culture and understandably health in this extraordinary year, have dominated in the field of submissions.
