In the heart of Newcastle, a dynamic dog-loving duo is reshaping the way we nourish our beloved furry friends. Meet Joel Borserio and Ryan Haste – the passionate minds behind Pet Pantry.

The newly launched game-changing business is dedicated to providing human-grade pet food that not only delights but also nurtures our pets’ health.

Joel, deeply rooted in the city’s hospitality scene, teamed up with Ryan, a veterinary science graduate with a keen interest in animal nutrition, both driven by their shared passion for animals and a desire to enhance their well-being through superior nutrition.

“We’re both extremely passionate about animals, particularly how we can improve their quality of life through nutrition,” Joel said.

This unique collaboration stemmed from Joel’s pivotal puppy adoption moment and Ryan’s love for the animal world. Last year, Joel and his partner adopted a four-month-old Groodle puppy named Ernie. 

Little did they know that Ernie’s dietary struggles and subsequent health scares sparked conversations about the inadequacies of commercial pet food and the need for a better alternative.

“After having Ernie for only three weeks, he was rushed to the emergency VET clinic where he was found to have tick paralysis. He was discharged the following morning and taken for further care and monitoring at the clinic where Ryan worked.

“As part of the recovery process, Ryan and I got talking about Ernie’s diet – in particular, his disdain for a lot of commercial pet food, as well as the poor industry regulations in Australia,” Joel said.

Joel and Ryan set out to raise the bar (and the bowl) for pet nutrition, creating meals so tasty even the pickiest of pups would wag their tails in approval. So, after much brainstorming and recipe tweaking – Pet Pantry was born.

“After countless morning coffee interactions, we realised there was a place in the market for a high-quality, nutritious, and most importantly tasty pet food.”

Launching with a subscription-based delivery service, Pet Pantry offers a variety of recipes, delivered straight to your door.

“This has been over six months in the making from our initial discussions. We wanted to make sure these products were not just adequate, we wanted to go above and beyond.

“Countless adjustments, weeks of trials, and lots of cooking later, we have created what we set out to develop – a nutritious, tasty, human-grade pet food, created to excel above the standards that Australia currently has.”

As Pet Pantry celebrates its big debut today, Joel and Ryan are already dreaming of expanding their empire, one doggo meal at a time. But don’t worry, they promise to keep the personalised touch that sets them apart from the big dogs in the industry.

“We’ve trialled this product with a wide array of dogs from toy poodles to great danes, and all of them have licked the bowl clean.”
