Have you wandered down Darby Street recently? You might have noticed a new look restaurant in the spot of the old Depot on Darby. The space has had quite the makeover and officially launched as the Laneway on Darby earlier this year.
The space has been rejuvenated into a light, airy café space boasting a modern Australian street food menu. Perfect for a mid-morning brunch, afternoon tea or even for those looking for an easy meal out.

Owned and operated by a local Newcastle family, the Laneway on Darby provides some great food, drinks, and service.

The colourful custom neon signage is sure to draw attention of those passing by, as well as the one-of-a-kind graffiti styled artwork at the entrance and bright orange backboard portrait inside; all of which were created by staff!

“We took inspiration from the laneway with all of the art, and we really wanted to liven it up in here because it was originally so dark. So, it was a fun way to do it to get the staff involvement.”

The food menu is kept simple with all of the traditional Aussie favourites; the corn fritters or eggs benedict are our picks for breakfast, and for dinner we’d recommend the mushroom and sage risotto or the pork belly; twice cooked with capsicum chilli jam and Asian greens.

If you’re dining out with the kids or think of yourself as a big kid, you’ve got to get your hands on one of their all-time favourite freakshakes. With seven standard flavours to choose from, and staff constantly offering up their own creations, the flavours are endless!

For the coffee lovers, which we know full well there are quite a few of us in Newcastle, you’ll be excited to know that the Laneway on Darby roasts all of their beans in-house. The premium blend offered is made from 100% Arabica beans, with the exotic blend coming from the highest grown estate coffee.

“We roast our beans in-house, as well as our decaf. We do it all!”

The café has big plans on utilising the space for events, currently hosting a monthly Drag Queen night, Tucked & Loaded with different Queens appearing at each event. But it doesn’t stop there, the space has also been hosting a range of trivia nights and will be including some more exciting events in the future; stay tuned!
