Seafood restaurant located at Newcastle Yacht Club
You might recognise the faces behind Nor East as the old burger slinging chefs from Bistro Lowlands over at Lowlands Bowling Club. At the helm is experienced chef Tony Harrison with his team now bringing a new edge to the harbourside venue, Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club.
After building a successful name for themselves at Lowlands over their five years, an opportunity too good to resist came up within the Yacht Club’s dining space and in a quick turn, Nor East was up and running in August 2019.
“The Throsby basin is a bit forgotten, the likes of Flotilla, The Criterion, Wickham Boatshed and us here at Nor East; we’re all trying to bring a vibe back to this area of Newcastle,” Tony said.
The name, Nor East is one some of you might also recognise. The original Nor East Bistro was also situated on Newcastle Harbour and had a strong following over a decade ago. Tony brought with him the ex-sous chef of the original restaurant and previous London-based chef, Darryl Popp, in keeping with the brand of the name.
“There’s that little bit of history that the original Nor East was at the harbour, and it just so happened that the name was available, and a lot of people had that synergy with me and that original brand. There’s been this beautiful influx of original Nor East customer.
“We brought the entire team with us across from Lowlands and we’ve also had Darrell, who was the sous chef at the original Nor East. He’s an amazing South African chef. We’ve also got a really good up and coming guy, Brenton Woods and we’ve really retained just about everyone.”
The move to the larger venue has seen Tony and the team behind Nor East Bistro create a higher-end menu with a strong focus on fresh seafood dishes with the aid of Lake Macquarie fishmongers; Shane’s Seafood.
Big seafood sellers on the menu include the Bistro’s fresh oysters that come directly from Port Stephens. Choose from French Mignonette, Kilpatrick, or Saffron Mornay. Other seafood starters include the Seafood Paella Arancini Balls with garlic aioli and petite salad and the Grilled Slow Braised Octopus with chorizo, potato, Romesco sauce and aioli.
From the main menu, the colourful Daintree Barramundi Fillet with cauliflower puree, roasted local broccoli, brussels and lemon caper butter, and the Gnocchi with slow-cooked chicken, sage, garlic portobello mushroom, and parmesan are amongst our favourites.
Burgers and Pizzas have been recent additions to the menu and have proved to be a huge success with the locals. Installing a new pizza oven during COVID-19 restrictions, meant for many takeaway pizzas slinging their way out the Nor East Bistro’s kitchen.
The dedicated pizza menu has your typical toppings including the Margherita with a tomato base, Fior de Latte, mozzarella, and basil as well as the seafood focussed Slow-cooked Octopus, confit potatoes, Romesco, mozzarella, and aioli, and of course meat lovers favourite; Three Little Pigs on a tomato base with pork belly, salami, Italian sausage, and mozzarella, plus more!
Similarly, with the burgers, there are options for everyone. Starting with the classic Royale With Cheese made with house-ground beef pattie, double American cheese, Dijonaise, ketchup, and onions. For the spicy lovers; The Firebird with sriracha slaw, double cheese, buttermilk fried chicken and jalapeno mustard, and the meat lovers have got to try the Pigsy 2.0 with pork belly, pulled pork, sriracha slaw, and hoisin sauce.
The venue has also just reopened for breakfast on the weekend so you can order all your favourite Aussie breaky options and enjoy the harbourside views. But make sure to book ahead by calling (02) 4940 8188, to avoid disappointment.
