4 ways to celebrate 100 years of Mount Pleasant Wines
This year marks quite the milestone for Mount Pleasant Wines, 100 years since Maurice O’Shea first purchased the property and named it Mount Pleasant. Being one of the oldest vineyards in the Hunter Valley, we couldn’t let such a big birthday go uncelebrated. So HUNTERhunter caught up with the team to find out how we could get involved with this big occasion.

Get yourself over to the Mount Pleasant Wines cellar door which is located in a beautiful corner of Pokolbin, Hunter Valley. Nestled below the Brokenback Ranges and looking out over the vineyards, there are some beautiful indoor and outdoor spots at the cellar door to enjoy a tasting.
The cellar door offers the perfect opportunity to taste some wines that blend grapes from some of the first vineyards that Maurice O’Shea planted back in 1921. The perfect way to get involved in this 100 year birthday celebration.
Chief Winemaker Adrian Sparks took us through a tasting of three red wines, starting with the 2017 Mount Pleasant Mothervine Pinot Noir. Although this red had the clear hallmark intensity of a Mount Pleasant red, it was one of the lighter wines making it a pleasure to drink. For only $35 a bottle this is a well priced red from one of the world’s oldest Pinot Noir vineyards.
We moved up in intensity to the 2018 Old Paddock and Old Hill Shiraz. As Adrian explained, the intense pepper flavours from Old Paddock grapes, pairs perfectly with the lifted red fruits of the Old Hill vineyard. This three time gold medal winning red will set you back $55.
Lastly, Adrian cracked the good stuff for us, a 2017 1921 Vines Old Paddock Shiraz. The Old Paddock vineyard was planted by Maurice O'Shea when he first took ownership of Mount Pleasant in 1921 (hence the name of course). At $135 a bottle, this beautiful bottle of wine can cellar for up to 50 years, a perfect one to pull out for that special occasion.

June 13 | Exclusive Members Only Maurice O’Shea Celebration
Sometimes it pays to be a member and this is one such members only event! An exclusive lunch for 110 Mount Pleasant Wines Members will be held in the barrel room of Mount Pleasant Wines, Pokolbin.
Some of the best chefs in the region will be creating a five course meal inspired by original recipes from Maurice O’Shea’s personal recipe book.
Well known local chef’s Troy Rhoades-Brown, Andy Wright and Scott Webster will join forces to bring canapes, an entree, main and dessert to the table of these lucky guests.
And the event wouldn’t be complete without wine. Some of Mount Pleasant’s top shelf wines will be poured throughout the day and guided by none other than Mount Pleasant Wine’s, award winning Chief Winemaker - Adrian Sparks.

Weekends in June | Maurice O'Shea Masterclasses
The founder of Mount Pleasant Wines, Maurice O’Shea’s was a pioneer in table wines. His blending techniques and sophisticated use of oak were credited with producing red table wines of enormous flavour, intensity and longevity.

So it is only fitting that as part of the Mount Pleasant Wines 100 year celebration, they honour the 'Grandfather of Australian Wine' by making a Shiraz using only the fruit from the original vineyard plantings.
Hosted at 1:30pm every Saturday in June, the Maurice O’Shea Masterclass gives you the opportunity to experience six vintages of Mount Pleasant Wine’s flagship Shiraz alongside carefully selected canapés from local chef, Andy Wright.
Places are limited to 8 people per masterclass, so bookings are essential. Or private bookings may be possible, subject to availability. For $180 per person, this exclusive event is a must-do for any Shiraz Lover.
Throughout the year | Winemakers Dinners
Throughout the year, a variety of winemakers dinners will be held in Sydney and the Hunter region to celebrate 100 years of Mount Pleasant Wines.
Delectable food will be crafted to match a suite of Mount Pleasant Wine’s finest drops.
You will be joined by Winemaker, Adrian Sparks or Jaden Hall as they share the secrets behind the award winning wines and give you a little bit of insight into the history of this iconic brand.
The first Winemaker’s Dinner for the year is a sold out event in Lavender Bay so keep an eye out for the announcement of the next event and book yourself in quick.

1. The HUNTERhunter and Mount Pleasant Wines Competition prize entitles the winner to three  bottles of Mount Pleasant wine with grapes from their 100 year old vineyards.
2. Competition opens 01/05/2021 and closes 30/06/2021at 1700 hours.
3. To enter, Eligible Entrants must:
- Upload a photo from their visit to the Mount Pleasant Wines cellar door to their Facebook or Instagram account;
- Tag HUNTERhunter and Mount Pleasant Wines; and
- Be following HUNTERhunter and Mount Pleasant Wines.
Multiple entries are allowed.
4. Entry is open to Australian residents aged over 18 years of age.
5. This is a Game of Chance.
6. The prize is non-redeemable for cash.
7. The prize draw will take place on 01/07/2021 at 10am. The winner will be contacted via Instagram or Facebook within three  business days of the draw.
