How to spend 48 hours in Maitland this autumn

As autumn kicks in, there is truly no better time to take a peaceful and cosy getaway with a breath of fresh air. Maitland is the perfect detour off the highway to a slice of bliss – it’s a city with an ever-evolving and high quality food scene, vibrant cultural offerings, and a rich history.

Try our curated 48-hour itinerary to make the most of your stay with things to do, where to eat and drink, and where to stay.

Day 1

Afternoon

Start by checking into your accommodation so you can get rid of your bags and begin adventuring.

There’s plenty of accommodation options within Maitland itself, ranging from apartments like Hunter Studios to cottages like Fieldsend Cottage, or stay in nearby Morpeth with its historic charm – try the William Arnott Hotel or The Bronte.

Sometimes the best way to explore a new place is to simply go for a walk. If you need a little direction and want to get stuck into Maitland's history, try the Poverty and Prosperity walk or the East Maitland Heritage Walk.

Evening

Maitland has a burgeoning dining scene, but there are some spots that have preceded the abundance of new restaurants that have popped up in recent years.

Start your culinary journey at Fratelli Roma, where traditional Italian cuisine meets modern flair. From fresh antipasto to handmade pasta, this family-owned restaurant offers a taste of Italy in the heart of Maitland. Fratelli Roma also has a fantastic wine list – chat to restaurant manager Nathan about your selection if you’re feeling overwhelmed by choice!

For some outdoor fun, head to Stockade Hill and try your hand at disc golf. Set amidst scenic surroundings, this free activity is a great way to take in the landscape while having a (friendly) competition with your friends or family. Simply aim a frisbee at the holes, and away you go.

Evening

Maitland is home to a host of historic pubs with striking architecture and homely interiors. It’s time to experience one for yourself for tonight’s dinner – we’re particularly fond of The Family Hotel or the Metropolitan Hotel.

The Family Hotel offers elevated pub fare influenced by native Australian ingredients, and the drinks list is dominated by Hunter Valley wines and local craft breweries.

Kickstart your final day with a delicious breakfast at Vixen in Lorn. This cafe offers a tempting range of breakfast classics, all served with a side of friendly hospitality.

Venture to the impressive Maitland Regional Art Gallery to wander the autumn exhibitions once your breakfast has been devoured. This autumn, the gallery is displaying Ron Mueck’s monumental Pregnant woman, on loan from the National Gallery of Australia – don’t miss it.

Explore the quaint village of Morpeth, known for its historic charm and scenic beauty. Wander along shared pathways, pop your head into boutiques, and stop at Boydell’s to taste local wine and have a bite to eat.

It’s important to mention that Maitland hosts a stack of great events throughout the year – in autumn, you might want to time your trip to coincide with a major event like Maitland Taste or Steamfest.

Whether you're exploring historic landmarks, savouring culinary delights, or immersing yourself in the arts, a 48-hour stay in charming Maitland is always a good idea when autumn rolls around.
