Our guide to the best takeaway to eat at the beach in Newcastle

When the weather is warm and you don’t feel like cooking, takeaway at the beach is obviously the way to go.

Luckily, Newcastle has both beaches and takeaway joints aplenty – read on for our guide to the best takeaway to bring to the beach in Newcastle.

Bar Beach

Sit on the grassy hill just below Bar Beach car park, claim one of the tables along the Bathers Way, or take your food down to the beach – there’s options when it comes to enjoying a takeaway feed at Bar Beach.

We usually stick to The Junction and Darby Street for a Bar Beach takeaway evening. Choose Birdie for burgers and chicken, VietKing for fresh Vietnamese dishes, Mr Rice for Chinese classics, authentic Thai eats from Benjamas Thai, or Beach Burrito for affordable Mexican fare. Or, grab your feed from right on the beach at Swell Kiosk, open in the early evening on Thursdays to Sundays.

Dixon Park Beach

Dixon Park Beach boasts a few beachside spots that are great for a sunny afternoon or balmy evening picnic. Sit close to the lifeguard tower, head towards the playground for undercover tables, or go right to the top on Ocean Street for some more tables and fantastic ocean views.

Duck down the road to DiRoma Pizzeria for thin, crispy Roman-style pizza, try Sunnyboy Kiosk for fish and chips, or head to Don Beppino’s for hearty pasta.

Merewether Beach

Take your pick from down on the sand at Merewether Beach, Jefferson Park, on the grass next to Merewether Surfhouse, or the hill above Merewether Ocean Baths, and start munching on your takeaway picnic.

We love Larrie’s for tasty takeaway joint classics, Best Coast Pizza for loaded pizzas, Blue Door Kiosk for grab and go dishes like açai bowls and wraps, and Merewether Surfhouse Kiosk for hefty burritos at lunch time.

Newcastle Beach

Whether you sit up on the seats looking over the beach, perch yourself on the steps, or spread out on the sand, enjoying takeaway as the sun sets over Newcastle Beach is a pretty ideal way to spend an evening.

Ordering a fish burger and chips from Scottie’s is a quintessential Newcastle experience, and while we love to eat under the festoon lights, we’re also partial to taking our food across the road to the beach. Other nearby favourites include Sticky Rice Thai and The Humble Thai for – you guessed it – Thai food, Zaffran for Indian curries, and Napoli Centrale for wood fired Neapolitan pizza.

Nobbys Beach

The grass just above Nobbys Beach or at Camp Shortland between the beach and the harbour are both great spots to kick back with takeaway while you soak up the sea breeze.

Grab a burger or fish and chips from Swell Kiosk if you’re keen on an afternoon picnic, otherwise stop off at The Kingfish for seafood boxes, Banh Mi 233 for banh mi and Vietnamese specialty dishes, or Susuru for ramen and gyoza before heading to Nobbys.

Redhead Beach

Take your takeaway onto the sand or hang out at the top of the hill above the carpark at Redhead Beach. Eat your post-swim feed while you enjoy the views and the laid back atmosphere.

We like 19 Beach Side for pizza and burgers, Seaview Malaysian for stir fries, noodles, and curries, and Cargo Espresso for beach kiosk classics at breakfast and lunch – all of which are within walking distance from the beach.
