Vegan food delivery service launches in Newcastle
Vegans rejoice! A brand-new vegan food delivery service, Black Door Vegan, has just launched in Newcastle Saturday nights. Think flavoursome dishes delicious enough to keep both the vegans and non-vegans happy.
Launching on the very first day of 2022, Black Door Vegan is proudly presented to the people of Newcastle by local couple and fellow vegans, Remi Espe and Jacob Black.
Vegans throughout Newcastle have been slowly but surely impressed with the vegan offering available across town, but are always welcoming of dedicated vegan eateries, so to have a completely vegan delivery service is something worth celebrating.
Both teachers by trade, the couple found themselves wanting more when it came to enjoying vegan food across Newcastle. Having been avid home cooks and experimenting in the vegan food game at home for almost two years, it was when COVID hit that the cogs started turning for the couple to create their own thing; Black Door Vegan.
“We have been vegetarian since our teens and transitioned to vegan a few years ago. Although the vegan scene in Newy has expanded in recent times and we do have a number of amazing vegan eats, we still found ourselves making regular trips to Sydney and Melbourne to fulfil our needs!
“Then when COVID hit, we found it hard to get our fix, so Remi started experimenting at home. We love entertaining and cooking for our friends, and we constantly had mates telling us we should open a restaurant. We had also watched a few videos about the rise of ghost kitchens and virtual restaurants, so that’s when the cogs started to turn,” Jacob shared.
The takeaway restaurant operating out of a ‘ghost kitchen’ (hired commercial kitchen space) offers a range of vegan versions of your favourite westernised Asian dishes. The menu includes a selection of starters, mains, sides, and even sweets! All of which are 100% vegan.
“We are offering a small and concise menu, to begin with, with the aim of nailing the dishes we’re making whilst creating new favourites for people and generating excitement about them.”
The starters themselves pack a flavoursome punch. Featuring Duck Pancakes with pickled carrot, cucumber, coriander, crispy duck fillet, Peking sauce, and house-made mayo; alongside the iconic Spring Rolls filled with yam, carrot, cabbage, black fungus, and house-made dipping sauce; and the absolutely scrumptious Satay Skewers with crispy chicken and house-made peanut satay dipping sauce.
Onto mains, it’s hard to believe everything is vegan because the flavours are just like the real deal. Taste the Sweet and Sour Pork with battered pork, pineapple, capsicum, tomato, carrot, and sweet & sour sauce; Lemon Chicken complete with crispy skin chicken fillet, lemon sauce, and salad greens; and my personal favourite, the Plum Duck with crispy skin duck fillet, plum sauce, and salad greens.
The usual sides of steamed rice and seasonal greens are available with the sweets including Crispy Taro Rolls made with rice pastry taro & sweet potato filling, and cinnamon sugar; and Sesame Balls complete with fried glutinous rice, pandan filling, and sesame coating.
“We’re super excited about providing current local vegos and vegans with the food they’ve been craving and somewhat deprived of in Newcastle. But we’re possibly even more pumped about the potential influence we could have on all Novocastrians (especially non-vegans), by opening up their horizons and expanding their minds about how ultra-tasty, realistic, protein-filled plant-based food can be.”
This new foodie offering in Newcastle is currently available for delivery only through DoorDash on Saturday evenings from 5pm-9pm. Be amongst the first to devour this delicious new addition to the Newcastle foodie scene and get your Black Door Vegan fix this weekend.
