The winners of the People's Choice Award at the 2024 Bar Awards
Last night, on Monday August 5, nearly 300 hospitality professionals packed out Bartholomew's for Newcastle's first Bar Awards, where the best of Newcastle's bar scene were celebrated. There were 11 awards presented, as well as the People's Choice Award.
While our panel of industry judges were tasked with deciding the winners of the 11 award categories, the People's Choice Award was left up to the public – the people who sip, savour, and socialise in Newcastle's thriving bars, pubs, and brewpubs.
The people voted for their favourite Newcastle Bar, Hotel (Pub), and Brewpub – here are the winners.
People's Choice Award – Favourite Bar
Winner: Coal & Cedar
Coal & Cedar is the New York-style speakeasy that's been wowing drinkers since 2014. Hidden in a nondescript spot on Hunter Street, this dark, sultry bar oozes style and sophistication thanks to its impeccable drinks, service, and interiors. As soon as you step inside this rabbit hole, you'll no doubt want to linger a while over creative cocktails, quality whisky, and cracking conversation.
People's Choice Award – Favourite Brewpub
Winner: Modus Merewether
Modus Merewether was the first outpost for the Mona Vale craft brewery, and it's now the company's HQ – a vast, light-filled space that balances high-tech with earthy, raw textures. It's not only a fun spot to sample Modus' brewery-fresh beers, but also a multi-purpose venue perfect for functions and events. And, beer lover or not, Modus can cater to you, making it a place to gather for just about everyone.
People's Choice Award – Favourite Hotel (Pub)
Winner: The Lucky Hotel
Imbued with a Palm Springs-inspired air of fun and warmth, The Lucky Hotel is a favourite with locals, and for good reason. The food is a cut above, the drinks always hit the spot, and that courtyard on a balmy evening? One of the best spots in the city to be, especially with a cocktail in hand.
If you voted, not only did you show up to support your favourite Newcastle venues, but you also went in the running to win a night out in Newcastle, designed entirely by you. We'll be contacting the winner of this incredible prize tomorrow morning, so keep an eye on your inbox!
There were thousands of votes for venues across the city – thank you to everyone who had their say.
