Eat & Drink

Don’t walk, rum!

Celebrate all things rum with this curated guide of Newcastle rum bars, local rum distilleries, and of course, rum-based cocktails!

BARS

First things first, we’re lucky right here in Newcastle to have not one, but two specialty rum bars across town. First up is none other than rum-inspired Tiki Bar in the Hunter St Mall, Blue Kahunas. Brought to us by self-proclaimed rum enthusiasts, Byron and Prudence, this tropical getaway sits smack bam in the centre of the city and has become known for consistently concocting their elaborate rum-based cocktails.

DISTILLERIES

Newcastle Distilling Co.
Brought to us by local distiller, Lucas Cattell, the distillery has been a culmination of over twenty years of love for the industry and plenty of trial and error. The local distillery is also behind Newcastle’s very first, barrel-aged rum, Eagle One. Made from fermented treacle and aged for three years in an American Oak ex-bourbon/port barrel, this rich but smooth rum has delicate aromas and a pleasant taste.

Hunter Distillery
Located in the heart of the Hunter Valley in Pokolbin, Hunter Distillery has been making themselves known in the local distilling game since their opening back in 2015. Sample their in-house barrel-aged for three years, Golden Rum. The limited-edition rum is hand etched and individually numbered and presented in a wooden box with perspex front.
