Diner eats in Newcastle East

Earlier this year, Newcastle East welcomed a fresh and vibrant addition to its foodie offering with the arrival of Humphrey’s. Opening in April, the takeaway spot is the brainchild of Brendhan Bennison, one-half of the masterminds behind much-loved venues, The Falcon and The Ship Inn.

Known for his expertise in the cuisine of the Southern United States, Brendhan has brought a top-notch Aussie classic takeaway experience with a hint of his signature style to the East end of Newcastle.

More than just another eatery, Humphrey’s carries with it sentimental value, with the name paying homage to Brendhan’s late beagle – Humphrey.

“Humphrey came over with me when I emigrated from the States back in 2012. He passed away in February 2022 – he was almost 18,” Brendhan said.

Visiting the venue, you’ll see Humphrey’s portrait taking pride of place on the back wall overseeing the day-to-day running of the joint – and no doubt enjoying the aromas emanating from the kitchen.

The former Ink Food site has undergone some slight transformations, with Brendhan bringing in some colour to the once dark interior. The result, a welcoming environment complete with a signature black and white checked floor, classic takeaway vibes, yet slightly elevated.

What makes it elevated you ask? Short answer – the food!

“One of the things I’ve been saying since I first arrived in Australia was that no one was really doing good sandwiches that you would find in an American, Italian, or Jewish-styled deli. Now, they’re everywhere in the major cities.”

For the long-time followers of The Falcon and any sandwich lovers out there, you’ll remember Brendhan’s foray into the loaded sandwich game back in 2022 with the launch of Falconi’s Deli – a takeover of sorts of The Falcon kitchen during lunch hours Monday to Friday.

This little takeover was a testing ground for the Humphrey’s concept, and now we can see Brendhan’s idea come to fruition with a continuation of some of the original sandwiches from Falconi’s Deli plus a whole lot more loaded dishes.

The offerings include a mix of classic Australian takeaway favourites complete with Brendhan’s signature flavour profiles and his unwavering passion to do takeaway food justice.

“I’ve got things like the Roast Chicken Roll, Chicken & Gravy Roll, and Chicken & Chips but they’re all done in my style.”

In addition to the specialty sandwiches, the Fish & Chips are a standout, with the Humphrey’s team having perfected their batter making for an almost greaseless dish.

“I put on probably 3kg just doing batter taste testing. I really wanted to nail that batter. It’s mercifully greaseless and it took us a long time to get it to that point.”

The specialty sandwiches are where Brendhan’s flavour combinations really come to shine. Each crafted to perfection and complete with house-made sauces and salad dressings, the specialty sandwiches include the Jive Turkey, B.L.T, Grilled Chicken, Salad Sanga, Roast Beef & Cheddar, and the Morta-Della-Grotta (which I was lucky enough to sample myself).

“All of our bread is delivered fresh daily and our sourdough is like a softer sourdough. It’s not the kind of sourdough that will cut your mouth open with every bite.”

For true foodies, order the Humphrey's Hot Beef complete with slow roasted beef, provolone, roasted peppers and onions, and pepperoncinis on a fresh toasted long roll served with dipping jus – it's akin to a Cheesesteak and a French Dip taking a ride with a Chicago Beef sandwich.

Beyond food, Humphrey’s is also venturing into retail with a range of their house-made sauces and salad dressings available for purchase (along with some merch from The Falcon on the shelves too).

Currently open from Monday to Friday, with plans to open Saturdays in the near future and available on UberEats and soon to have their own online ordering system, Humphrey’s welcomes you in for a delightfully elevated takeaway foodie experience.
