Plan a Visit to these Cellar Doors to Get Your Sparkling Wine Fix

Bubbles, bubbly, sparkles, nectar of the gods…whatever you call it, there are plenty of delicious sparkling wines to be found and enjoyed in the Hunter Valley. But where to start…?

There are over 150 cellar doors in the Hunter wine regions, and many of them produce sparkling wines in various shades and styles. So from the Upper Hunter to Pokolbin, we thought we would hunt down some vineyards with more than one sparkling wine on offer … just to make it worth your while to visit if sparkling is your thing.

We thought we would shake things up a bit and explore outside the primary wine region hot spots and came up trumps with these two winning cellar doors.

Upper Hunter

Hollydene Estate Wines
If you haven’t paid a visit to this beautiful property, it is certainly worth the 1hr 40min drive from Newcastle. Not only do they have a cellar door but an elegant, award winning restaurant and outdoor seating so you can take in the beautiful scenery and atmosphere.

And for you sparkling fans, Hollydene have three varieties currently available. A sparkling rosé, a sparkling Blanc de Noir and the JUUL Sparkling Blanc de Blanc which has won a number of awards, most recently the best Sparkling of the Year by Winestate Magazine.

Pierre’s Wines, Branxton
Don't let the location fool you, Branxton is actually quicker to get to than Pokolbin, approximately 50mins from Newcastle. So adding this one on to your wine tour or just taking a special trip is easier than you think.

Pierre's Wines is a little family run vineyard that packs a big punch with six sparkling wines available. Peter, winemaker and owner has a renowned reputation for producing quality sparkling wine in the traditional French methode.

Tastings are hosted by Peter himself or a family member in the quaint brick cellar door.

Broke

For a smaller wine region, Broke has quite the array of sparkling wine..."road trip", I hear you say!

Greenway Wines
Starting with Greenway Wines, they have three sparkling varietals - two white which both utilise the lesser known Fiano grape and one red which is delightful when chilled.

Greenway is a lovely quaint setting to enjoy a wine tasting either inside by the fire or outside on the terrace.

Greenway Wines, Broke

Krinklewood Biodynamic Vineyard
This quaint little vineyard is set on a large property with beautiful provincial style gardens and courtyards to enjoy and a handful of friendly animals including the resident peacock.

Krinklewood has two sparklings currently for sale (and a pink that’s sadly sold out). A sparkling crisp blanc de blanc and a red for those bubbly red lovers.

Talits Estate
This beautiful cellar door is nestled at the bottom of the Brokenback Ranges and has two delicious sparkling wines available. A chardonnay-based fresh white and a softer sparkling rosé.

Talits have a substantial indoor and outdoor undercover space for tastings and Broke Brewing on tap for those who are after a change in beverage.

Lovedale

I am sure many a glass of bubbles have been devoured at a Lovedale Long Lunch, so it's not a surprise this region has quite a few sparkling wines to offer us.

Gartelmann Wines
Gartelmann Wines is a lovely place to stop in for a tasting and maybe a spot of lunch at the on site restaurant, The Deck Cafe Lovedale which overlooks the picturesque landscape.

Gartelmann has the three main types of sparkling wine covered, a white (Blanc de Blanc), red (Sparkling Shiraz) and one for those who prefer the sweeter side - a pink Moscato.

Tatler Wines
Another well known cellar door in Lovedale, Tatler have a large lawn area so you can enjoy the sunshine, an indoor tasting area and food available on site as well.

They have two varieties of sparkling wine currently available: a Frizzante which is a refreshing, subtly sweet sparkling and a sparkling pink wine with appealing aromas of strawberry, watermelon and fresh raspberries. Tatler Wines will also have a 2014 Pinot Chardonnay sparkling and a sparkling red coming out later this year.

tatler wines hunter valley

Wandin
Wandin produces two sparkling wines both priced at $22, one a cuvee and the other a sweet moscato. The cellar door is in an airconditioned industrial-style shed on their large property.

Allandale
Allandale is also host to two sparkling wines, a dryer style made from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes and a semi-sweet Gewürztraminer.

The tastings can be held indoors amongst the winemaking equipment or outside on the veranda or lawn overlooking the views across the vineyards to the Brokenback Ranges.

Pokolbin

The local region with the most options for sparkling. You will be spoilt for choice in Pokolbin.

Peterson House
We had to start with the producer with the largest variety of sparkling wines available in the Hunter Valley. Over 40 of them in fact! If that doesn’t sound like Heaven to those of you who have a passion for bubbles, then we don’t know what is.

Peterson House have a range of white, red, rose, dry and sweet sparkling wines and at the cellar door you can taste a few to help define your taste of the ultimate bubbles.

There is a restaurant and chocolate shop onsite too so you can make quite the stop of it.

Peterson House, Pokolbin

Bimbadgen
Bimbadgen is one of the larger vineyards in Pokolbin and it has a substantial sparkling wine range to go with it. There are five sparkling wines for sale, starting with a non vintage sparkling semillon for a happy $18 per bottle, up to a vintage Blanc de Blanc for $50 a bottle.

Bimbadgen has a newly renovated cellar door and restaurant on site.

Tyrrell’s Wines
This brand has a long history and has produced quality sparkling wines since 1978. There are three types of white sparkling wine available, all Bruts with a light fresh taste. The NV 1858 Cuvee Brut is currently exclusive to members only.

The Tyrrell's Wines cellar door feels true to its heritage, with an authentic and traditional atmosphere.

Saddlers Creek
This boutique family run vineyard has two sparkling varieties currently available, one white and a red from their premium Bluegrass Collection.

Saddlers Creek have a quaint cellar door with an outdoor lawn area perfect for those sunny days.

Hunter’s Dream
I was first introduced to this vineyard on a wine tour and at that time it was a hidden little gem. Well that has changed as they have quickly developed a reputation for delicious wines.

Hunter’s Dream currently have three sparkling wines available, one red and two white. The sparkling white in particular has grown in popularity and often has sell out vintages.

The cellar door features lovely floor to ceiling windows in a modern cathedral like style overlooking the front lawn.

Brokenwood
The renowned brand of Brokenwood has a unique architecturally designed, cellar door in Pokolbin. There is also a cafe, restaurant and private tasting rooms on site, so certainly enough here to keep you busy during your visit.

Brokenwood currently have two types of sparkling wine available, a non vintage and a 2011 Méthode Traditionelle.

Leogate Estate Wines
Enjoy a tasting experience here inside the elegant cellar door or on the verandah overlooking the grassed courtyard and views over the Brokenback Ranges.

Leogate have three sparkling wines available, two white - a non vintage Frizzante and a Blanc de Blanc made from Chardonnay grapes, plus a sparkling red.

Tulloch Wines
Tulloch Wines have two sparkling wines, their Verscato which is a Moscato made on Verdelho grapes and is delicious and not quite as sweet as some Moscatos. There is a white varietal too. Prices for sparkling start at a reasonable $22 a bottle for non members.

Enjoy a tasting upstairs on the balcony overlooking the lawn or inside. There is also a private tasting room on site.
