Check out this little slice of The Caribbean right in the centre of Newcastle serving up street food, with a distinct Latin flair.
The hole-in-the-wall Caribbean joint, Little Castro opened up to Newcastle in mid 2017 by Damian Beric, a hospitality genius who has been working in the industry since his late teens.
“We wanted to do something super different and fun, it was a massive gamble doing it the way we did we weren't too sure if people would go for the gritty,
no frills style,” Damian told me.
If you're a lover of Caribbean flavours and you work in the city, this one needs to be on the top of your lunch list, but FYI, expect a line. These guys are mighty popular!
Choose from a Medianoche (brisket, swiss cheese, slaw, pickles, and blueberry BBQ sauce), a Cubanos (sliced roast pork, ham, swiss cheese, pickles, and mustard), or a Mojito (chicken, ham, onion, lettuce, cucumber, provolone, tomato, and mojito sauce) or choose from one of their scrumptious bowls; pork, chicken or their vegetarian option.
You’d think working here every day, Damian might get a bit sick of the food, but nope, it’s just that good!
“I eat Cubanos every day! But my favourite thing would be the mojito sandwich. People come down for the bowls but when I suggest a sandwich, they keep coming back for them! They’re just so delicious and unique,” Damian told me.
Always down for a chat, Damian will be sure to talk your ear off each and every time you drop by for your Cuban eats or coffee treats.
“I love talking to everyone who comes down for a coffee or a feed, and I know they love listening to me!”
If it’s just coffee you’re after, Little Castro also serves up a mean cup of joe with the help from Nitro coffee. So, why not head along to Little Castro and try something different on your lunch-time break?
