Pappa Sven’s Nordic Film Club is hosting a special screening of Mother of Snow Cranes at Tower Cinema this July, sharing the remarkable true story of ornithologist Ellen Vuosalo.
On Sunday, 26 July, Mother of Snow Cranes will screen at Tower Cinema, exploring humanity, nature, resilience, and the life of a woman who became known as the Mother of Snow Cranes.
Presented as part of Pappa Sven’s Nordic Film Club, this special screening follows the extraordinary life of Ellen Vuosalo, who was born in Toronto to Finnish immigrants, studied zoology in the United States, and later travelled to Iran after marrying an Iranian man.
What began as a deeply personal journey led Ellen to the wetlands of northern Iran, where she spent five decades studying and protecting the last flocks of the critically endangered Siberian crane.
Directed by Finnish filmmaker Iiris Härmä, the documentary blends conservation, scientific research, with cultural and gender norms Ellen challenged along the way.
