Our ultimate thrifting trail through Lake Mac and Newcastle

Written by: Mia Pennington

If there’s one thing the Hunter does better than most, it’s community, and nothing captures that spirit quite like an op shop. Lake Macquarie and Newcastle are dotted with second-hand havens where sustainability, affordability, and serendipitous treasure-hunting all collide.

With Lake Mac Council already spotlighting an impressive trail of community-run stores, we’ve taken things further, adding in our favourite Newcastle gems to create the ultimate pre-loved shopping route across the entire Newcastle region.

Thrifting Trail

Make it a full day route

Here’s how to build the perfect thrifting day across Lake Mac & Newcastle:

Start your morning at one of  the Lake Mac stores nearest to you: Belmont, Warners Bay or Charlestown, for the best early drops. Then move onto Wallsend where there is a feast of op shopping availble before heading to Hamilton’s cluster of op shops for a high-density loop around midday.

By afternoon, wander to Islington and Darby Street for vintage and boutique-style finds, then finish the day by grabbing late coffee on Darby and sort through your haul.

Our top tips list

→  Bring a reusable bag, or two.
→  Wear easy-to-slip-off shoes and top and bottoms for quick try-ons
→  Bring your headphones and listen to your fave playlist while you browse
→  Ask about new stock days, every store has its rhythm.
→  Check the white hangers within salvos stores - these are the salvos boutique picks
→  Carry cash for the small community-run shops.
