The heritage streets of Newcastle’s East End are made for meandering shopping trips, long lunches, cultural experiences, beach swims, and perfect days out.

Benjamin Gallagher, artist and Visitor Services Officer at Newcastle’s Visitor Information Centre, says that his customers are frequently surprised by what’s on offer.

“The East End of Newcastle has it all laid out for the perfect day trip,” he says.

“I advise people take the light rail through to Newcastle Beach where they are within walking distance of two amazing beaches, a saltwater ocean pool, skate park, historic Fort Scratchley and Nobbys Lighthouse, amazing cafes, bars, restaurants, ice cream and of course world class art galleries and independent traders.”

For wholesome brunch fare, seasonal menus, and relaxed vibes, grab a table at Moor Newcastle East, or why not duck into the light and airy space that is Momo Wholefood Cafe for something fresh and nourishing.

Gallery fix

If you’ve still got browsing energy, Benjamin suggests taking time to wander and appreciate all of the galleries in the area.

There’s Wester and LEDA galleries with regular exhibitions for emerging and established artists, and the Newcastle Art Gallery soon to be fully reopened in February 2026.

“With an arts background I am most passionate about promoting the vibrant arts scene in this city,” he says.

“If I detect a like-minded customer, I hasten to mention The Lock Up and Timeless Textiles galleries on Hunter Street.”

Timeless Textiles is a gallery dedicated to the art of fabric and fibre that celebrates local and international artists working in embroidery, quilting, weaving and mixed media. The shop section is equally wonderful, filled with hand-crafted scarves, wall hangings, art and objects to take home.
