Michelle often jokes that she’s “stood behind that counter for half her life”… and she’s not wrong. Ramjet has truly been her baby.

Twenty-five years ago, at just 26 years old, Michelle opened the doors to Ramjet Assortments in Newcastle.

What began as a dream quickly became an icon.

For a quarter of a century, Ramjet has been that store — the one locals recommend without hesitation, the one customers return to year after year, the one that has dressed generations of women and men, and quietly woven itself into the fabric of the city.

So why sell something so loved?
Not because of hardship.
Not because of burnout.
And definitely not because Ramjet isn’t thriving.
Simply put — life has become beautifully full.

In recent weeks, Michelle married her husband Ben, and together they’ve been growing another business, Urns by Hewiston — a design-led cremation urn company that has quietly found success on the global stage.

What started years ago with aluminium urns has evolved into a thoughtfully curated range incorporating timber urns and scatter urns. Ben, a graphic designer by trade, brings a strong creative edge to the business, and it’s this design focus that truly sets Urns by Hewiston apart.

Each piece is considered, modern, and intentionally different — far removed from the traditional expectations of the category.

Their unique designs can be viewed at urnsbyhewiston.com, and have already gained traction in the USA and Canadian markets.

Now, the business is soon to launch in Australia, introducing a more organic, natural aesthetic, one that feels distinctly “us”, and more suited to Australian sensibilities. And with plenty more designs up their sleeves, the future of the brand is looking incredibly exciting.

With honesty (and a laugh), Michelle admits she simply doesn’t have the brain space to give both ventures the attention they deserve. Rather than stretch herself thin, she’s choosing to do something thoughtful: hand Ramjet over to the right new owner — someone who will love it, nurture it, and enjoy it as much as she has.

This is not a goodbye — it’s a handover.

Michelle is genuinely invested in seeing Ramjet continue to thrive and is more than willing to work alongside the new owner during a transition period, sharing knowledge, relationships, and the little details that have made Ramjet what it is today.
