Local business aims to add some sparkle!

The dream to own his own business was once just that, a dream, but for local Newcastle Drag Queen Angel CupCakes (Jamie Weir) this is becoming a reality.

Angel CupCakes, a Newcastle-born Drag Queen has become a master of the craft, from doing gorgeous makeup to making hip pads, he can do it all. Angel (of Kamilaroi nation) has been known in the Hunter LGBTQIA+ community as a ‘local legend’ for his wig styling.

Angel began learning the craft of wig styling at the age of 21 when he watched a video tutorial online. Since then, he has become the go-to community member to help style the wigs of other queens. In 2022, he’s taking his once hobby to the next level.

Angel CupCakes created ‘CupCakes Coiffure’ to make the dream a reality, “starting this wig business was my way of helping people who don’t know where to access stuff to start drag,” he said in his Newcastle-based studio.

Since beginning this journey, Angel is taking the next exciting step in the wig industry, releasing his own original line of wigs for performers. The process of creating custom wigs was fun and exciting for Angel, but like all businesses, it came with its own challenges.

“I had to reschedule so much of the wig launch due to COVID, from getting my models to having the wigs created, it became a process that tested my drive and patience.”

After overcoming the adversity of COVID, Angel’s wigs and styling services will be available across Australia with the first appearance being at Sydney’s Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras 2022.
