Discover this cosy suburban cafe in Hamilton
Hamilton has always been a haven for cosy nooks, vibrant hangouts, and top-notch coffee, and the newest addition, Spur, is no exception.
Setting up shop in the former Second Fiddle spot on Samdon Street, Spur cafe brings a fresh yet nostalgic vibe to the neighbourhood.
Brought to you by coffee enthusiast couple and owners of Merewether and Cooks Hill coffee spots, Arlo’s Coffee, Rob and Minnie are the lively duo behind Spur – a cafe that is no doubt set to become the new favourite gathering spot for locals.
Rob, originally from Crescent Head, moved to Newcastle for university and quickly immersed himself in the local cafe scene. Minnie, hailing from Port Macquarie, also shared a similar love for coffee, deeply rooted in her family’s history.
“My uncle has his own cafe in Port Macquarie, my mum and my nan have also both had cafes in the past so it’s in my blood. I started drinking coffee when I was like 13 or 14. I have always been interested in the coffee scene,” Minnie said.
Their paths crossed through mutual friends and they bonded over their love for coffee.
“We started dating and less than a year later we had decided to open up Arlo’s,” Rob said.
The first joint venture, Arlo’s, opened in December 2021, quickly became a beloved spot in the community, and their newest addition, Spur, will follow in its footsteps.
The inspiration for Spur struck during a trip to New Zealand where Rob and Minnie were drinking Allpress Espresso beans continuously throughout their trip.
“For the last year or so, we’ve been keeping our eyes peeled to see if any potential spaces opened for a cafe,” Minnie said.
They had their eyes on this spot for three months before they finally were handed the keys. A few weeks of renovations later and the new community-focused cafe was officially open.
“It’s a completely different vibe to what we have at Arlo’s but we’ve had so much fun with it!”
The exterior has had a fresh lick of deep blue paint, whilst the interiors are styled in a mid-century modern style complete with metal and glass furnishing featured throughout.
The team have been able to spread their wings when it comes to the food menu, offering an all-day breakfast and lunch menu with tasty dishes made simply.
“The food offering is pretty similar to what we have at Arlo’s but just extended. I am obsessed with our breakfast plates at the moment.”
Also available is a huge range of baked goods on display, some of which are created on-site by Minnie herself alongside some extra treats from Sonoma.
“We’ve got so many creative friends so we have put some of their pieces up on the walls. We’ve also got a few little retail spaces throughout. One of the girls we work with across both caravans and the cafe, Emily, makes her own beautiful ceramic mugs under the brand, 4 Maurs, and they’re available to purchase.”
Looking to the future, Minnie and Rob mention they have plans for their suburban space.
“Long term, we’d love to open up for little wine nights. Watch this space!”
With their track record at Arlo’s and their evident passion for what they do, it’s safe to say that whatever they have planned next will be well worth the wait.
