Introducing Carrington 70s inspired diner
Nestled on the corner of Cowper and Young Street in Carrington, a charming new cafe has opened its doors, blending a nostalgic 70s vibe with approachable eats.

Fairmont Diner, the brainchild of local couple Mike (of The Falcon & The Ship Inn) and Freya, may have only opened on Tuesday, July 2 but it's quickly become a new local favourite thanks to its distinctive coffee offering, diverse food menu, and retro interior.

The journey to the venue’s opening has been a labour of love, and a long time coming for those who knew about the couple’s plans when they bought the building two years ago.

“When we first looked at this building, we knew we wanted to do a cafe in this spot,” Mike said.
The building itself, sitting on the south side of Cowper Street, has had quite a colourful history including being a fish and chip shop throughout the 90s and early 00s.

The spot has undergone a huge renovation, and the exterior itself is hard to miss with its crisp white and baby blue colourings, and those rather iconic rounded windows. Take a step inside and you’re transported to a 70s-styled diner, complete with warm, earthy tones, comforting textures, and playful designs throughout.

The cosy interior has one wall lined with booth seating, the other with two separate tables, and four bench seats overlooking the kitchen space. Outside has four repurposed oil tins turned tables with industrial stools.

Whilst the venue doesn’t have the physical space to sit hundreds, it’s the cosy and inviting Fairmont Diner vibe that might just see keen diners line up to snag a spot.

Partnering with South Melbourne-based coffee roasters, ST. ALi, Fairmont Diner is one of two local venues serving the brand’s coffee, with Little National also home to the Victorian roastery’s beans.

The food menu is another welcome surprise with the team leaning on their chef, Sam Nelson, who brings with him his knack for breakfast cuisine.
“He’s brought the chilli scram, the hotcakes, the porridge, and a couple of other things. We’ve been really lucky to get someone who really knows their eggs and breakfast cuisine.”

Looking ahead, the venue has plans to not only continue to be a staple in the Carrington cafe scene but intends to offer pop-up nights on Fridays and Saturdays once they’ve got a liquor license.
As Fairmont Diner continues to grow and evolve, it remains a testament to Mike and Freya’s passion for creating a space that not only serves great coffee and food but also fosters community and connection.

Whether you’re a coffee aficionado, a food lover, or a Carrington local keen to see what’s new in the area, Fairmont Diner with its blend of retro charm and contemporary comfort is worth dropping by.
