New chapter for the long-standing Wickham watering hole
In the heart of Wickham sits the long-loved institution for both locals and visitors alike; The Lass O’Gowrie.

With its storied history and commitment to live music, the pub has recently entered an exciting new chapter under the stewardship of Declan Smyczynski, Sam and Laura Cruikshank, and Kate Cruikshank.

This dynamic team took over the reins 17 months ago, but only in the past two months taken over the management of The Lass, creating an environment that not only continues in the direction of the venue’s history but opens it up to be a welcoming spot for all.

“We took over the management side of things on the 11th of June and it’s been great. We were super excited to keep the Lass for what it was – a live music venue – and really getting the kitchen up and running,” Declan said.
The team’s vision centres on creating a space that draws in a local crowd during the week, with a special focus on Saturday and Sunday lunches that seamlessly transition into lively evenings of music.

The venue’s been a crowd-favourite spot for many years, and with the beer garden amongst some of the biggest in the area, the new management is hoping to really bring people to Wickham to enjoy that space in the warmer months.

“We really want to utilise that back beer garden area because I think it’s one of the best in Newcastle and it’s really such a gem.”
Plus, it might just be the best spot to enjoy the venue’s newest culinary offering – a focus on Mexican and South American flavours.

“There was already a Mexican restaurant in here, but with the Lass being such a special and unique venue, an institution, we knew we needed a menu that was just as unique to the space that it was in.”
The result is a share-style menu inspired by both Mexican and South American cuisine, crafted with passion by the venue’s Head Chef, Rob Maher.

“This is the sort of food that Robbie is really passionate about. He just loves Mexican and South American cuisine so the menu is just working really well.”

The menu, designed with zero-waste principles in mind, features weekly changing tacos based on available ingredients and topped with in-house fermented ingredients.
“We’ve got a Parilla Grill in the kitchen. All of the meats are cooked over that open fire which gives everything a nice smoky flavour. We also have a double-barrel smoker out back, which we use to smoke brisket and pork for tacos, as well as our double pork cutlets.”

Among the most popular dishes is the Half Charcoal Chicken which has garnered rave reviews.
“That has been by far the best seller. We’ve had people come in and say it’s the best chicken they’ve ever eaten!”

The menu also features a traditional Mexican sandwich, the Drowned Chicken Sando served in a pool of mild chilli sauce. Our picks would have to be the Kingfish Ceviche, Coxinha (Brazilian chicken croquettes), Achiote Prawns, and the 350g Beef Flank Steak.
“The best thing about the menu is that if you come in as a group, you can really taste a little bit of everything.”

As summer approaches, the menu aims to refresh its offerings with a few lighter dishes and salads added to the menu. Importantly, the entire menu is gluten-free with plenty of vegan and vegetarian options available.
Exciting new additions to the gastronomy of the venue include a cocktail menu supported by Carrington’s Earp Distilling Co. as well as a new wine list, and upcoming cocktail specials happening every Sunday.

The Lass O’Gowrie has no plans to sway from its roots, as the team continues to champion the venue as a hub for live music, with a diverse range of events throughout the week.
Wednesdays see its open deck nights come to life where aspiring DJs are encouraged to practice and perform. Thursdays see jazz nights take over the inside of the pub bringing a completely new vibe to the venue. Friday nights feature three to four local bands. Saturdays are reserved for either promoter or in-house events, ensuring a dynamic and ever-changing lineup. And Sundays are all about Beer and Birria Tacos alongside a resident band.
PLUS happy hour happens Monday through to Saturday from 4pm-6pm.

Committed to its community, The Lass still intends to play host to the Perfect Sunday Markets which take over the beer garden every few months. These markets are a testament to the pub’s dedication to providing a space where locals can gather, shop, and enjoy the unique offerings of the Wickham area.

Under new management, The Lass O’Gowrie has successfully preserved its legacy while infusing it with the fresh energy and innovative offerings that is needed. With its focus on share-style Mexican and South American cuisine, a vibrant live music scene, and a commitment to the community, the Lass is set to remain a cherished Newcastle institution for years to come.
