Calling the old Workshop at Tailors space home on the Islington end of Beaumont St, Sapori at Tailors is brought to you by husband-and-wife duo, Francesca and Fabrizio. The pair, originally from Rome have called Newcastle home for the past two years and are excited to be bringing a taste of Italy to you.

“We came to Australia for the first time for a holiday. We went all around Australia for one month. When we went back to Italy, we said we really enjoyed it here maybe we should go back. We wanted to have an experience and learn English.  But now, we’re staying put and trying to bring a little bit of Italy to Newcastle,” Francesca said.

Officially opening up to the public on the 18th January, Sapori at Tailors has been busy every night since with people queuing up for their takeaway pizza goodness as well as those booking well in advance to get a table at the newest Italian venue in town.

Using fresh ingredients, you’ll find both Francesca and Fabrizio in the kitchen every day getting everything prepared for what is always a busy night ahead.

“I make all the Italian desserts fresh daily. Every day I try to make something different, but I’ll still make the favourites every day. I really like making desserts, so I try to keep it interesting. The tiramisu is my personal favourite.”

With pizza at the core of the Sapori offering, visitors can expect dedicated authentic Italian eats with both Le Rosse (tomato base) pizzas and Le Bianche (mozzarella base) pizzas as well as small starter plates and of course, delicious Italian desserts.

One of the current favourites on the menu is Rocco, made on a tomato base with mozzarella, salami, fried red onion, nduja, olives, and chilli. Rocco is a dedication to Francesca’s father, Rocco; a pizza maker since the age of 12!

“Rocco, my father, always makes this type of pizza, and we were struggling to find a name. He made this pizza years ago and we knew we wanted to make this type of pizza here, but it doesn’t actually have a proper name, so Fabrizio said why don’t we just use Rocco’s name?”

Alongside their mouth-watering authentic Italian eats, Sapori at Tailors is also selling a range of Italian products, some of which are impossible to find anywhere else in Newcastle. From Italian-made pasta, sweets, and even beverages; visitors can shop for a little bit of Italy to take home with them.

For those who don’t know the history of the building, hear from Francesca as to why they’ve chosen this particular name.

“We choose Sapori at Tailors because before us, this was the Tailor’s Workshop but before then it was an actual Tailors. We wanted to keep the original story of the building and then we put Sapori which is our own touch, which translates to flavours in English. We chose this because we don’t just do pizza, we do sweets and other things; both savoury and sweet and lots of flavours.”

Wanting to insert their Italian flair into not only the food but the ambiance and everything they do at Sapori’s, Francesca is excited to share their Italian personality and hospitality with the people of Newcastle.
