Lynch's Hub

A harbourside hub for coffee, snacks and bicycle hire

This family-run business is situated right on the corner of the harbour, and wow do they have some big plans!

Originally from Newcastle, Blake, the manager has been incredibly passionate not only about what they’re doing and what they plan on doing with the space, but the history that comes with it.

“It’s the only place that is recognisable from what it was when I was a kid…I used to ride in as a kid with my mates from Wallsend on my BMX. We’d go fishing and we wouldn’t want to ride our bikes back in the heat of the day, so we’d come over and hide behind this building, and as the guys were coming in to buy their bait, we’d sell them the yellowtail out of our buckets for cheap.”

Listening to the stories of his childhood, you can tell that Lynch’s Hub is more than just a cafe. The inside is lined with old photos of the area, and Blake has quite the emotional connection to the place. He reminisced on the time he spent here with his grandfather,

“My grandfather (who I genuinely believed to be some kind of Hercules in bifocals) brought me to this funny little, blue, yurt-like building when I was a boy to buy yellowtail and green prawns for bait. It was a special experience to me but not especially unique, I was hardly the first boy to be taken by his father or grandfather to Lynch’s to buy bait, or a pound of prawns for Sunday dinner, or even just to have a yarn. Lynch’s was an institution in Newcastle and a focal point for the community. Before Honeysuckle and the foreshore promenade, Lynch's was the only reason that anybody ever went over to the harbourside of the train line.”

This is exactly why he wanted to bring the space back to life.

"The Lynch’s Hub vision is for a social enterprise that will improve the amenity of the Newcastle harbourside and make a strong contribution to place-making efforts as the foreshore parklands are redeveloped, re-vitalised and reconnected with the city of Newcastle."

Future plans for Lynch’s Hub are well underway with their recently renovated cafe space as well as an upcoming community cycle workshop space, a collaboratively managed tour desk for small local tour operators and their awesome range of bikes available for hire.

Whilst the space is centered around cycling, their main aim is to encourage collaborative offerings for the city whilst continuing to add to a vibrant atmosphere to the city’s harbourside.

Oh, did we mention they offer picnic hampers? Order them online, hire a bike and head off on a weekend adventure around this great city with your loved ones.
