A decade on for this Newcastle institution
Tucked away in a Newcastle side street, Market St Basement has long been a go-to for those seeking great food, expertly crafted drinks, and a warm, inviting atmosphere.
As the Newcastle institution marks its tenth anniversary this March, owners Alicen and Jordan reflect on the restaurant’s journey, its ever-evolving menu, and the newest addition to its offering – Family Fridays.

“The business has been through such an evolution since we originally opened. It really has been such a rollercoaster,” Ali said.

Like any hospitality venue across Newcastle, Market St Basement has had its share of ups and downs, having to constantly adapt and refine itself over the years. Through it all, it continues to remain a favourite among both locals and visitors – a testament to the dedication and passion behind the venue.
At the heart of Market St Basement’s success is its strong emphasis on both food and drinks. Head Chef Yann Bouton, who has been leading the kitchen for over two years, brings a level of skill and creativity that elevates the dining experience.

“Yann is just amazing and his food is insane. He is French Mauritian, and his talent in the kitchen is incredible.”
The menu, steeped in classic Italian flavours with modern twists, has garnered a loyal following. The restaurant’s signature vodka rigatoni pasta with pancetta, sugo, chilli, garlic, and fresh parmesan remains a standout – so much so it’s a dish that has cemented itself as an absolute must-try.

But, it’s not the only favourite. The gamberi e calamari (seafood pasta) is updated seasonally and the gnocchi beurre noisette (burnt butter and sage gnocchi) are both amongst some of the most popular dishes.

Outside of the pasta, the menu extends to a selection of antipasto – don’t go past a serving of the focaccia and burrata – plus ten different pizza toppings (gluten-free bases available) as well as a small selection of sides and, of course, dessert!

Beyond the food, Market St Basement’s reputation for top-tier cocktails has kept patrons coming back.

“We’re a restaurant but with a really strong emphasis on cocktails. Our limoncello sorbita has been on the menu since the business’ inception. That’s a ten-year-old cocktail recipe! That and our chilli tommy’s margarita are our most popular.”

The wine list has even been considered, having been expertly curated by sommelier Stephane Pommier, rounding out the overall experience by ensuring that every meal is paired with the perfect drop.

After ten years in business, Market St Basement is still finding ways to evolve and cater to its customer’s needs. Their newest initiative, Family Fridays reflects Ali and Jordan’s own recent journey into parenthood.
“Our Lola is over a year old now, and we realise how hard it is to dine out with kids! Come Friday nights, we don’t want to cook, so the idea with this is that people can make use of our kids eat free deal whilst still enjoying a nice dinner out.”

Running across the earlier dinner sittings, Family Fridays offers one complimentary kids’ meal per adult meal purchased for children 12 years and under.
Through every shift and every new chapter, Market St Basement has remained a constant in Newcastle’s ever-changing hospitality scene.

“We have so many people come through and tell us that this was their first date venue. We’ve even had some come back and have their engagement parties and even a wedding ceremony in here. It’s really cool that we’ve been here for so long we get to see those kinds of things happen.”

A decade in, and Market St Basement continues to thrive, offering its signature mix of incredible food, memorable drinks, and a welcoming space for all.
Whether it’s for a romantic dinner, cocktails with friends, or now, a stress-free family night out, this Newcastle staple is still serving up the goods.
