Do you remember the Hunter St favourite hole-in-the-wall joint known for the Caribbean takeaway? Well, in case you missed it, Little Castro has packed up shop and now operates out of Lowlands Bowling Club.

Founded in mid 2017, Little Castro quietly became a favourite foodie haunt in Newcastle, but outgrowing their small space took the team to their new premises in Cooks Hill in October 2019.

“We were down at the shop, and we couldn’t do any more numbers in that space. So, we kept our eyes open for somewhere. A couple of little spots come up that I missed out on, but then these guys actually contacted us. It worked out really well.

“We had two weeks to get a team together and get in. It was pretty hectic at the start, because we came in originally doing the old menu from Bistro Lowlands,” Damien said.

With Chef Damien Beric at the helm, Little Castro continues to serve up some of the best burgers in Newcastle as well as their well-known Caribbean food.

“We wanted to do something super different and fun, it was a massive gamble doing it the way we did we weren't too sure if people would go for the gritty, no frills style.”

Earlier this month, Little Castro has finalised their new menu, with all the go-to burgers still on the menu, but with a huge latin flair. Expect to see some of their old goodies such as the Medianoche; 24-hour smoked beef brisket, pickles, crunchy slaw, and blueberry BBQ sauce, the Cubanos; Mojo marinated roast pork, smoked ham, pickles, swiss cheese, and American mustard.

But what I’m personally psyched about, is the Little Castro famous rice bowls! Choose from chicken, pork, veg or lamb.

“The stuff of legend, our rice bowls are like nothing you’ve tasted before, using Bez’s signature crunchy rice fried in a top-secret herb and spice mixture, we can guarantee you’ll be coming back for more.”

If you're a lover of Caribbean flavours but you work in the city, too far for a walk to lunch, you might be keen to hear that Little Castro offers catering. That’s right, talk to your boss and start twisting their arm to get your Little Castro lunch-time deliveries.

For those of you who miss the ole Hunter St location, don't fret. Damien has plans to bring Little Castro 2.0 back to the city centre and potentially even Merewether; watch this space!

Next time to swing by Lowlands for a barefoot bowl, or are in the area, head into Little Castro and get your hands on (and your mouths around) some Caribbean flavours.
