MAEW MAEW

Unleash the roar – Maew Maew's debut as Terrigal's ultimate Asian street-food restaurant and bar

Terrigal ignites as MAEW MAEW emerges – an Asian restaurant, cocktail bar, and live DJ hotspot all in one. Co-owner Amelia Samingkaw reveals MAEW MAEW's inspirations, shaping Terrigal's newest dining destination.

"The stunning open windows with expansive ocean views and a huge floor space was the perfect canvas to start dreaming up ideas for our next venture," Amelia said.

The word "Maew" (pronounced “Meow”) itself, meaning 'Cat' in Thai, serves as a nod to their other successful Terrigal restaurant, Thaiger Temple, where "Saming" (from their surname) means 'Tiger'.

With a commendable seven-year journey at Thaiger Temple, Amelia and her husband, Yoddy Samingkaw, both accomplished restaurateurs, aimed to create a distinct and new experience with MAEW MAEW. The live music and DJ concept came naturally, stemming from Yoddy's DJ background.

“We wanted to bring that vibe back to Terrigal and offer somewhere beautiful that played a special brand of house music.”

But it's not just about the beats; their playlist features classic hits spanning decades, including the likes of Prince, Crowded House, Public Enemy, and P.M. Dawn.

The menu at MAEW MAEW is equally exciting. The charred pineapple margarita, crafted from house-grilled pineapple blended with Arette Tequila, has struck a chord with patrons. Accompanied by prawn betel leaves, the gentle dance of sweet and sour coconut embraces succulent prawns, tangy lime, and crispy peanuts.

Other small plates include sticky garlic and ginger chicken wings - an instant classic in the making. On the larger side, order the Nasi Goreng with pork belly and fragrant Indonesian-style fried rice, fried egg, and a touch of kecap manis. Experience a blend of sweet and spicy flavours in their barramundi salad accompanied by crisp green apple, mint, and basil.

The commitment to creating a supportive environment has resulted in long-term relationships with staff, some of whom have been part of the journey since high school.

The pink and turquoise interior, adorned with cosy booths, stands as a testament to the family's collaborative essence. In partnership with her brother Eli Rae, Amelia has crafted a vibrant and playful atmosphere infused with a hint of Thai street kitsch. Undoubtedly, it evokes a sense of familiarity and comfort for this writer.

The lighting fixtures are definitely the star of the show, born from the genius of a local friend, Sarah Staunton. Sarah's handcrafted lights have brought a dreamy rose-hued allure to the venue. The umbrella-like fixtures are reminiscent of the dynamic art installations that seem to breathe life at the iconic Capella Hotel in Sydney.
