Discover the wild side of Port Stephens this winter

Summer may be Port Stephens' busiest season, but winter reveals a wilder side of this coastal paradise. From humpback whales migrating along the coast and towering dunes glowing in the crisp afternoon light to wellness experiences immersed in the gumtrees, Port Stephens offers an unforgettable winter weekend away.

Day One: Wellness and wildlife

Ease into the weekend at Port Stephens Koala Sanctuary, where glamping tents are nestled among native bushland within an eight-hectare sanctuary dedicated to koala conservation.

Whether you're staying overnight or visiting for the day, take a wander along the Sanctuary Skywalk for a unique treetop perspective of the koalas in their natural habitat. Winter is also the ideal time to experience the sanctuary's new wellness offerings.

Port Stephens also has excellent land-based whale-watching vantage points. One of the best is Barry Park at the southern end of Fingal Bay, where a purpose-built viewing platform offers sweeping views over the famed 'Humpback Highway'.

After spotting whales and exploring the coast, head to Soldiers Point for dinner at the luxe four-star hotel Bannisters Port Stephens. Overlooking the bay, the stylish waterside retreat is home to Rick Stein at Bannisters restaurant, where fresh local seafood takes centre stage. Arrive early for sunset drinks by the infinity pool before settling in for a long, leisurely dinner.

Day Three: Slow exploration

Beyond the headline attractions, Port Stephens rewards slower exploration. On your way home, discover some of Port Stephens' lesser-known treasures. Take a hinterland detour to Seaham Wetlands, a haven for birdlife and nature lovers, or wander through Raymond Terrace on a self-guided historic walk.

For a peaceful coastal stroll, the Tanilba Bay Walk on the Tilligerry Peninsula offers beautiful water views and a chance to experience the quieter side of the region.

With its mix of wildlife, wellness, adventure and coastal charm, Port Stephens offers plenty of reasons to linger a little longer this winter.
