Head to the Hunter Valley for a day of Highland Games
Set against the picturesque backdrop of Lovedale’s Saltire Estate, the Hunter Valley Highland Games will return in 2026 for a vibrant day of Scottish heritage, strength, and community spirit.

Saltire Estate will once again come alive with the sounds of bagpipes, the sights of traditional kilts, and the heart-pounding excitement of the iconic Highland competitions.
Now an annual tradition for locals and visitors alike, the Hunter Valley Highland Games celebrates the long-standing connection between Australia and Scotland. It’s a tie that dates back to 1852 when Scottish pioneers arrived on Australian soil – among them, James Busby of Edinburgh, the man credited with planting the Hunter Valley’s first grapevines.

That historical link between wine and the Highlands sets the perfect stage for a day where caber tossing meets cellar door tastings.

Hosted by the HV Highland Games Management Committee, this family-friendly event showcases the very best of Scottish culture and athleticism. In 2025 the day had a packed schedule of events and activations including:
– Open stone put
– Husafell stone carry
– Caber toss
– Natural stones of strength
– Keg toss
– Highland fling
– Jacobite history display
– Highland cows
– Kids play area

More than just a sporting event, the day was full cultural immersion. Traditional Scottish music and pipe bands will provide the soundtrack, while local vendors and food trucks offer everything from classic haggis and Scotch pies to regional Hunter Valley specialties.

Of course, Saltire Estate’s wines flowed throughout the day, making it a celebration of both Scottish and local flavours.
Children were also well catered for with a dedicated kids’ area, complete with games, face painting, and hands-on craft activities with a Celtic twist. Your four-legged friends aren't forgotten either – dogs on leads are welcome too.

Held on the expansive lawns beside Saltire’s winery, the day blends ancient traditions with local hospitality. Whether you have Scottish ancestry or are simply curious about the culture, the Hunter Valley Highland Games offer a rare and entertaining day out in one of NSW’s most scenic wine regions.
