Newcastle’s Watt Space Gallery is set to shine brighter than ever come March 8 with the launch of Stories of Light – a captivating two-month program showcasing the works of 25 members of the WH!P Collective (Women of the Hunter in Photography).
This initiative, led by University of Newcastle art curator, Gillean Shaw, and WH!P founder, Edwina Richards, celebrates and encourages contemporary photographic storytelling in our local community.
The exhibition, which runs until May 18, is a collaboration between the WH!P Collective, The Newcastle Writers Festival, the University of Newcastle, and is proudly supported by the City of Newcastle.
Its launch on International Women’s Day aligns perfectly with the theme of the year – Count Her In – reinforcing WH!P’s founding values of addressing gender bias in the realm of professional photography.
Edwina Richards remarks on the diverse nature of the WH!P Collective, highlighting the group’s various approaches, passions, and skills. Since its inception in 2020, WH!P has showcased its members’ works in leading private and public galleries, reflecting a shared fascination and respect for the medium of photography.
Stories of Light is more than just an exhibition; it’s an anthology of narratives that delve into the complexities of personal and collective experiences. Richards emphasizes the bravery and time it takes to craft stories that truly reflect a place and its people, often transcending commercial constraints.
Throughout the duration of the exhibition, the public is invited to engage with the artists every Saturday at Watt Space. Additionally, a series of free workshops will be held at the gallery and various city locations, offering opportunities to learn, experiment, and play with photography.
Workshops include Voices of Women and Short Stories in Cyanotype by Clare Weeks and Kelly Barlin, Light Speed Dating in the Park facilitated by Hilda Bezuidenhout, and more.
Newcastle Writers Festival founder, Rosemarie Milsom expresses excitement about collaborating with WH!P.
“Our Festival is centred on storytelling, and collaborating with WH!P opens up new possibilities to explore different ways of conveying stories, especially local ones. We’re always eager to connect with other art forms.”
Stories of Light promises to captivate audiences with its diverse perspectives, compelling narratives, and dedication to celebrating local photographic talent. As Newcastle embraces this fusion of art and storytelling, the city’s cultural landscape shines even brighter.
