A site shaped by history: from hospital to hotel
Novotel Newcastle Beach sits on one of Newcastle’s most historically layered sites.
Originally established in 1817 as the Royal Newcastle Hospital, it served the community for nearly 190 years and became a constant presence in the city’s evolving story. Over time, the building experienced significant change, including damage from the 1989 earthquake, before the hospital closed in 2007.
In 2010, the site was redeveloped by Mirvac Group into The Sebel Newcastle Beach, marking its transition from healthcare to hospitality. Following this, in 2012, Dr Jerry Schwartz acquired the hotel, with management rights taken on by Accor, and the property was subsequently rebranded as Novotel Newcastle Beach.
Today, that layered history sits beneath a renewed focus on stays, events and coastal hospitality – a former hospital site now reimagined as a place for gathering, dining and escape.

Novotel Newcastle Beach is now offering its Superior Double Rooms, designed with families, friends, and groups in mind. With 20 of these room types available as part of the hotel’s 88-room offering, there’s flexibility for both smaller stays and larger bookings.

The Dalby Room – formerly home to local favourite Bar Petite – is the hotel’s newly transformed conference and events space, located on the ground floor and complete with a private courtyard for outdoor gatherings.
Named in honour of Mary Ann “Ma” Dalby, a local celebrated for her decades of volunteer work and community care, it’s a space to watch as ongoing renovations continue to elevate the venue.
For larger gatherings, the Morrow I and Morrow II Rooms on the second floor offer flexible layouts and sweeping city views. Whether it’s a business meeting, wedding, or gala dinner, these spaces can be tailored to suit any occasion.

Currently open for breakfast and dinner, the restaurant and bar are designed as a welcoming coastal dining destination for both in-house guests and the wider Newcastle community alike.
