The florist so nice they named it twice
The line of businesses along King Street has got to be one of the most European-looking spots across Newcastle – with that brick façade, friendly nature, and businesses that spill out onto the street, it truly is like a sight straight out of the streets of quaint European towns.
The newest addition to this strong lineup of businesses is none other than sister-run florist, aptly named Sister Sister.
Wedged into the former Chiefly de Gallo site and rubbing shoulders with Napoli Centrale, Arno Deli, and a soon-to-be new bar space, Sister Sister is your new favourite botanical haven on King Street.
Founded by Brisbane-born sisters, Alisi and Leilani, Sister Sister opened their doors to Newcastle in early April. Their venture into floristry can be traced back to both of their individual careers in floristry and shared workplace in Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley on James Street.
Having spent a year in the floral and retail world, the sisters joined forces to create something unique on their own, with the initial spark for Sister Sister coming from the idea of a Valentine’s Day pop-up, which eventually led to securing this iconic spot on King Street.
“One day, I was walking past here and it had the big for lease sign on the window and I just loved it. The brick and the floor was just so beautiful – I wanted it! We applied and now here we are,” Leilani said.
The name, Sister Sister Flower Gallery, reflects not just their relationship, but the inviting atmosphere they’ve created within the space.
“It’s very much a reflection of us. People love finding out that we’re sisters and get especially excited if they happen to be buying something for their sister.”
The addition of flower gallery emphasizes the sisters’ vision of creating a space where visitors can immerse themselves in the beauty of the flowers and artwork.
“It’s a space where you can just come and look. You can tell the space has a nice effect on people when they leave.”
The overall vibe of Sister Sister is natural, organic, and raw floristry. You’ll spot their space the minute you curve around King Street as the shop spills out onto the sidewalk with their plants and bouquets.
“Our style is making things look really natural and organic. We love branches and that botanical kind of feel. It’s a little bit wild,” Alisi said.
The gallery isn’t just a place to buy flowers; it’s an experience where visitors can indulge in the sensory delight of sight, touch, and smell.
In their short few weeks in Newcastle’s CBD, Alisi and Leilani have already formed great relationships with the surrounding businesses as well as a collection of local Hunter Valley growers.
“We’ve tried to source as local as we can with our flowers. Building those relationships with a bunch of local growers in the Hunter Valley has been really fun.
Each visit to Sister Sister Flower Gallery is sure to never be quite the same, as the girls like to update the format of the space weekly. Not to mention, the girls love the space so much they’ll occasionally stay open as late as 9pm. So for passers-by, it feels like they’re in Europe – where else can you drop by and pick up fresh blooms at 9pm in Newcastle?
Whether you’re seeking a bouquet on the run, want to order a bunch of flowers for delivery, need a moment of botanical mindfulness, or simply some local inspiration, drop by Sister Sister Flower Gallery on King Street.
