The creative coffee loving genius bringing joy to the local scene

It’s that time again when we take you behind the scenes with our favourite local business owners and creatives to find out where they go to eat, what playlist they’re listening to, where they take their out-of-town friends, and ultimately, what makes them tick.

For our 10th instalment of SPILL, we’re catching up with the creative coffee-loving genius behind Floozy Coffee – Kristy Mujana (or KMAC as she’s more commonly known).

Firstly, what and where would people across Newcastle recognise you from?

People would recognise me from hanging around coffee shops and owning Floozy Coffee Roasters.

Where are you from originally?

I’m half Australian, half Balinese, and was raised on the Central Coast.

What made you decide to make Newcastle home?

My husband, Hal, is from here, when we first met we were both living in Sydney, working in pubs and not sure what we wanted to do. We loved the lifestyle here and decided it was a good opportunity for us to make big life changes, so when we moved here in 2015, we opened our first cafe.

Now, we have a five-year-old and Newcastle is an amazing place to have a family, at this point we couldn’t imagine living anywhere else.

Do you consider yourself more of an early bird or a night owl?

Early bird for sure! The nature of working in coffee and having a young child means I can’t really be a night owl right now!

What’s your morning ritual?

My ideal day starts with a 6am Pilates class at The Pilates Space. Then I’ll run home to shower and change, drop our kid at his early childhood centre and head into Floozy HQ for an oat flatty and a chat with the team. Then I can start my day out in the roastery.

Where’s your late-night hangout spot?

Jam’s Karaoke is seriously addictive.

What’s your coffee order?

Oat flat white and a batch brew.

Tell me about your biggest career highlight…

There are a few but I think a recent highlight would have to be the coffee stout collaboration with Heaps Normal. Working with a company that I admire and then seeing our names printed together on a can was an incredible feeling.

In your spare time, what are your THREE top favourite things to do in Newcastle?

- Karaoke at Jam’s obviously
- Go to Lambton Pool with my kid
- Op-shopping in Islington

On the daily, what’s guaranteed to make you smile?

The team at work.

What do you NEVER leave the house without?

My water bottle and AirPods.

We’re all about keeping it local here at HUNTERhunter – tell me your favourite local businesses that you live and breathe by and why you couldn’t live without them…

Jam’s: I think this interview is just my ode to Jam’s… but I just love it so much! Jam’s has curated the most supportive and fun atmosphere. We love a Friday night there where Jay Smith does live band karaoke.

The Pilates Space: I started going there last year again, just the most supportive place. All the instructors are so sweet and it has helped me to start exercising again.

What are you reading / watching / listening to now?

We have a not-so-secret passion for trashy romance novels in the roastery so if you see me or Lucy packing coffee with our earbuds in, you can assume that’s what we’re listening to on Audible.

If you’re needing a short break away from Newcastle, where do you go and why?

Tamworth. We have friends who own a café, Camp Grounds, out there so we visit as often as we can. Op-shopping in Tamworth is also amazing!

What would you like to see more of in Newcastle?

More and more Asian food pls.

Lucky last – who would you recommend we interview next for SPILL?

I guess at this point I have to say the Jam’s crew lol
