Hamilton’s Aikido dojo: 19 years of tradition, discipline, and community.

If you’ve driven down Hamilton’s Donald Street anytime over the last 19 years, the word Aikido will no doubt have popped out at you.

A now Hamilton institution, the dojo was introduced to Newcastle by owner/sensei Darius Wingate-Pearse, who continues to be the driving force behind not only the dojo’s longevity, but the incredible community he’s built around it.

When Darius reached out, inviting us to sit side-line to a Saturday morning class there was, quietly, a small amount of apprehension.

With all forms of martial arts traditionally being quite male dominated spaces, the idea of walking into a dojo as a female, with no experience, and no knowledge of what Aikido even is, did have me feeling quite nervous. It didn’t take long, however, for my apprehension to be wiped away.

What struck me first was the respectful nature of the dojo. The Japanese culture of deep respect is a significant part of the Aikido teachings. Students bow upon entering the dojo, to one another before each technique, and throughout the class, several times to the Kamisa which houses images of Sensei Chiba, who Darius trained under, and Aikido founder - Morihei Ueshiba.

The diversity of the class is also a pleasant surprise, the mix of genders, ages, body shapes and sizes, all taking to the dojo floor to train with one another. The 1-hour class shifts between moments of calm, to high energy combat style scenarios, core strength, coordination, and flexibility elements - all key to Aikido.

It also became apparent that Aikido isn’t about aggression, as Darius explains,

Aikido is about taking violence and turning it into a mutually beneficial outcome.

Darius' fascination with martial arts and Japanese culture was ignited at age thirteen following what Darius describes as ‘a chance meeting with a little old man’.

“He visited our farm on the Central Coast, and he invited me to train with him.

“I remember being thrown around by this tiny little man. I was quite a big 13 year old, and I tried many times to get him, but each time I’d just land on my back, and he would just smile which infuriated me.

Eventually my anger evaporated and I laughed at how ridiculous it was. I asked him how he did it and he said ‘Aikido’.

With Aikido permeating Darius’ life, he was hungry to learn more and train harder, and in 2005 Daris made the decision to relocate to San Diego to undertake a 12-month Aikido apprenticeship, training under Chiba Sensei 8th Dan, who had been trained by Aikido founder - Morihei Ueshiba.

Interested to understand why Aikido attracts such a diverse range of students, in particular women, I spoke to Leisa Graham who has been training at Newcastle Aikido since 2018, and explains how Aikido has completely changed her life,

Outside of gaining strength and physical fitness, it’s the confidence Aikido has given me that’s changed my life. It provided a different kind of wellness which I really needed at the time.

“What I enjoyed about Aikido when I first started, was that it felt like a safe place to train, it didn’t matter if you were a CEO or a student, 70 or 17 years old, none of this matters in the dojo, it’s very much an ego-free community.

“Everyone is very accepting and encouraging of one another, and we all work together. Senior students train with junior students to help build confidence and improve their techniques, and you don’t need to be really fit or experienced. That comes with your training.”

So is Aikido for you? The simple answer is: YES!

Darius’ extensive training and study in Japan has provided him with the skills to deliver classes that sit within the five pillars of Aikido, these being - Body arts, Weapons, Iaido, Zazen and Misogi, and within these classes is one to suit all levels of skill and fitness.

“There’s no prerequisites for Aikido, no age limits, size, coordination or flexibility requirements. This will come as you train.”

“Outside of the cardio and strength benefits, what Aikido is designed to do is help you handle life with clarity, and confidence. The supportive nature of the dojo is what builds confidence, resilience as well as calm.”

Whether you’re after a new challenge, wanting to build confidence, or simply curious about a martial art unlike any other, Aikido offers something truly unique. With Darius’ guidance and the welcoming community he’s created, it’s a place where anyone can grow, no matter their background or fitness level.
