Axe throwing in Newcastle CBD
Had a bad day? Looking to blow off steam and relieve some tension! Or are you looking to try something a little left of field? Here's your chance...
Opening within the former Slice Virtual Golf space on King St, MANIAX Axe Throwing brings to the Newcastle CBD the ancient art of axe throwing, in the most entertaining of ways.
The first axe throwing concept to open in Australia, it’s estimated that since MANIAX launched in 2014, some 15 million axes have been thrown across each of their venues. The craze doesn’t appear to be slowing with Newcastle being the 8th MANIAX location and more venues due to open soon.
Not sure about the idea of throwing an axe? Chatting with Head of Sales & Marketing at Maniax, Aaron Hocking he explained there’s no particular type of person that’s best suited to MANIAX, it’s something everyone can do and enjoy.
“It’s not about strength, power or size, it’s generally a smaller person who doesn’t throw the axe too hard that does it best, it’s more about your technique.”
“We get bucks parties, hen’s nights, birthday parties, work groups, even date nights. It’s everyone from the very amateur right through to those who take it quite seriously and compete in the MANIAX league.”
So what can you expect on a visit to MANIAX?
There are a couple of rules, as you would expect when there are axes flying around, not only to ensure an even playing field, but to keep everyone safe. Once you’ve signed the paper work your group is assigned an 'Axe-pert' who takes you through the safety side of things, don’t worry it’s quick, followed by the all important how to throw an axe rundown.
Within minutes you’ll learn how to hold (and not hold) an axe, the different throwing techniques, and how to safely remove your axe from the wall, and just generally how to get the most out of your MANIAX experience.
Throwing an axe may feel a little strange to start, you do however get into the swing of things pretty quick, and surprisingly, a great deal of pleasure is experienced when that first axe sticks!
Whilst you come for the axe throwing, the food and drinks have you lingering longer.
Feast on MANIAX’s made-on-site range of pizzas, burgers or take the grazing board option. Whilst combining alcohol and axe throwing may seem a little nuts, it makes perfect sense to enjoy an ice-cold craft beer or cider, glass of local wine or even a Viking-inspired cocktail whilst you’re getting your axe swing on.
Before you leave, take a browse through the merch. The range of hoodies, shirts and singlets feature the work of illustrator Sandy Sin, whose art can be seen throughout all of the venues, you can purchase your very own axe to take home if you really take to the sport.
Finally, the mandatory snap on the almighty Viking chair complete with sword and shield is a must. Regardless of your age, physical ability and interest in axes, MANIAX is a entertaining day or night out.
