One of the iconic café spots on Darby St is celebrating the cooler months by launching a brand-spanking-new foodie-focussed menu sure to tantalise all of your taste buds.

The long-standing, Three Monkeys Café has been proudly providing us excellent food and service for almost twenty years, and this new menu is certainly no exception. To hear all about what the crew has been up to in the kitchen, we hear from owners and business partners, Anthony Strachan, and Nicolas Williams.

“The new menu is all about refreshing some of our old favourites whilst bringing in some cracking new winter warmers. People can expect to see a new list of incredible burgers and more hearty meals on our lunch menu. From the breakfast menu we’ve kept a lot of the crowd favourites but also tweaked a few dishes to keep things fresh and interesting,” Anthony said.

“For me, this is the most exciting menu we have done yet, during covid we really scaled back what we were doing to make the menu more takeaway friendly,” Nicolas said.

Anthony, originally buying the business back in 2002, partnered with hospitality aficionado Nicolas just three years ago to co-partner the popular Darby St café joint, and since has been continuously serving up some of the best local dishes to their loyal customer base.

Whilst both the breakfast and lunch menu are overflowing with delicious dishes, we thought we’d share some of the standouts. Breakfast favourites include the Bubble & Squeak Reloaded with potato, pumpkin, and corn rosti, thick-cut bacon, spinach, tomato salsa, and sriracha aioli.

“My favourite dish is the Bubble & Squeak Reloaded; it’s a reworking of an old dish that our head chef Luke Repogle worked on some time ago and thought now was the perfect time to relaunch it… it’s the perfect winter breakfast dish,” Anthony said.

For the traditional breaky dishes you can of course expect the typical Avo Smash but with a Three Monkeys twist, French Toast and of course the Newcastle healthy favourite; Açai Bowl.

As expected, you can still always order your favourite espresso coffee with Three Monkeys Speak No Evil beans or go all out and treat yourself to a Nutella Latte because well, why not?

Of course, the smoothie go-to joint on Darby is still slinging out all of your favourites as well as their range of frappes, milkshakes, thick shakes, and even health shakes!

For those that love a loaded burger, the Karaage Fried Chicken Burger from the lunch menu comes loaded with Karaage fried chicken coleslaw, tomato, spiced aioli, char siu sauce, and a side of fries.

The colourful Deconstructed Chicken Tacos are sure to be a crowd favourite, complete with three flour tortillas, fried chicken, charred pineapple, corn, tomato salsa, coriander, and chipotle mayo.

“I’m most excited about the deconstructed chicken tacos, they were my little creation. They are a great dish to have with friends over a glass or two of wine,” Nicolas said.

For the pasta lovers, the Goddess Pasta is filled with pumpkin, smashed avocado, mushrooms, poached egg, onion, garlic, roast tomato, pine nuts, truffle oil, parmesan, and orecchiette! Or if you’re after something a little lighter but full of healthy goodness, the Warm Beetroot & Roast Sweet Potato Salad with roast sweet potato, beetroot, charred broccoli, kale, spinach, goats’ cheese, chilli tahini dressing, herbed crème Fraiche, and honey roast walnuts is an absolute no brainer!
