Maryville Tavern

This old corner pub has been lovingly restored, inside and out

Walk into the Maryville Tavern and it’s like taking a step back in time. The space oozes history. Miners lamps adorn the exterior, timber panelling hugs the Front Bar, and pressed metal ceilings pair with reeded glass entrances in a nod to the building’s heritage and the suburb’s steelworking past.

Ed Tonk’s book ‘No Bar to Time’ refers to The Maryville’s front bar as ‘probably one of the last of its type from the days of its being a steel worker’s hotel.”  “We’ve added our own touches with locally sourced artwork, custom lighting and earthy tones, but we’ve kept the original character and u-shaped bar structure.” says owner Ty Burford.

"Sitting around the bar is something that people have always liked to do and that’s definitely something that we want to retain,” says Ty. “We want to create an atmosphere that has people returning.

"Behind the bar we’re pouring a mix of old and new world classics and more progressive wines to please all palates and suit the broad demographics of the area. Add to that 20 beers on tap and a cocktail list of classics and Signature flavours.

"We’re operating the existing Beer Garden Bar out the back during peak service periods  until next year when we’ll refresh that space too.”

While sipping on a glass of your favourite drink is a great place to start, the Maryville serves up more than a pour. There’s a full lineup of entertainment to enjoy.

“We host Tuesday trivia night, meat raffles on Fridays along with joker poker and have members draws on Thursday nights. We also have happy hours Monday to Friday, 3 to 5 and Saturdays 10 to 12pm.”

Music will also continue to be a big part of the Maryville ambience with local DJs spinning vinyl in the beer garden on a Friday and more mellow vibes filling the air with live music on a Sunday afternoon.

And it’s not just humans popping in.

Step into the outdoor all-weather area, complete with heaters and misters, and among the scattering of tables and chairs you’ll likely spot a furry face or two. If you’re after a spot to enjoy a cold beer on a sunny afternoon with your best friend in tow, this is it.

“Dogs have always been allowed here, and the beer garden is their space,” says Ty.

If all of this hasn’t already whet your appetite for a visit, then the menu surely will. Leading the kitchen is renowned chef, Tim Montgomery, ex Bacchus.

Tim and the team have rustled up all your pub starters, classics, and mains, adding a touch of flair to each as only he can.

Tim’s fine dining experience shines through via the Kingfish Kokoda - the combination of coconut, onion, tomato, ginger brings both a delicate and punchy mix, served with puffed rice crisps to add interest and a nice bit of crunch.

For mains, the Macleay River Lamb char grilled on a skewer with Butter Beans & Tahini, Harissa Yoghurt, Fried Cauliflower, Mint, Smoked Almonds, Pomegranate brings the flavour.

The steaks are as exceptional as expected, Ty and Julianne have also placed emphasis on delivering a quality steak menu, sourced from none other than Cape Grim in Tasmania.

If you’re a sweet tooth, leave some room for dessert. The deep fried bread & butter pudding with Pedro Ximinez custard and vanilla ice cream will tip you over the edge, but worth the overindulgence.

There are of course weekly specials including steak and schnitzel nights, Monday pasta, Thursday kebabs and a lunchtime Rascal collaborative burger special. But if you’re craving something a little extra, there’s plenty on offer from juicy pork and fresh seafood to tender lamb and more.

Head into the Maryville to enjoy a cold beer, hearty bites, and some good times.
