Coffee, doughnuts, and ocean views by Newcastle Beach

Southy Canteen has landed at the south end of Newcastle Beach, bringing with it the same laidback energy and quality coffee that locals and visitors have come to love from the team at The Kiosk.

Officially opening its doors on Monday, December 16 2024, the new coffee kiosk has been a long time in the making.

“I think since we’ve been in talks it’s been over 14 months so it was great to finally open up in time for summer,” part owner, Luke Marshall said.

Despite the delays, the response from the community has been overwhelming. The team, made up of the same crew as The Kiosk, were more than ready for the summer rush with Southy Canteen drawing in a mix of beachgoers, surfers, and now, skaters from the newly completed skate park.

Whilst the spot is only a few hundred metres from their OG spot, the offering is much more streamlined with a menu designed for quick, yet high-quality, service.

“The goal was to make the offering different to what we have at The Kiosk. The menu that we launched with is very limited, and we are looking to expand on it now that we’ve worked a few things out.”

One of the standout additions? Doughnuts.

“We’re looking to give these doughnuts a bit of a push. It’s something a little different for the area, it’s fun, and they’re super tasty. We make them all in-house and they’re gluten-free too.”

Another key offering on the menu is their pies and sausage rolls, all sourced from Farrar Bakehouse in Mayfield.

If you’re a lover of the coffee at The Kiosk, you’ll love Southy Canteen’s flavours too. Sticking with their long-time coffee supplier, Marvell Street, you can expect the same coffee, but just a different blend.

They’ve also continued their partnership with Sophie of Raw Nutrition by Soph for their matcha offering.

While summer has been a roaring success, the team are excited for what the rest of the year holds. With the skate park going to be a drawcard year-round, Southy Canteen may just be the go-to kiosk for the skating crowd.

For now, Southy Canteen is settling into its new home, refining its offering, and enjoying the natural flow of Newcastle Beach’s bustling community. With good coffee, quality eats, and one of the best locations in Newcastle, it’s set to become a staple in the east end.
