Since its official launch in September 2018, this family-owned business has been brewing more than just great beer. It’s been brewing a sense of camaraderie, creativity, and local pride.

At the helm of Maltnhops Brewhaus today are three key figures; Cam McDonald, the front of house manager who has spent his life in Warners Bay; Phil Lyne, Head Brewer who moved to Newcastle from Tamworth over a decade ago; and Sam Lay, the sales coordinator, originally from Canada who has called Newcastle home for the last 11 years.

The trio’s blend of backgrounds and experiences has helped shape Maltnhops into the unique establishment that it is today.

The idea behind the launch of Maltnhops Brewhaus was sparked by a desire to fill a gap in Beresfield’s industrial landscape – a location that, while bustling with activity, lacked venues where people could gather, eat, and drink.

With its location close to the Hunter Valley, the team saw an opportunity to create something special. Within the year, Maltnhops Brewhaus was born and has since become a go-to spot for both locals and keen beer aficionados.

The brand’s beer ranges from classic styles to innovative flavour experiments and has earned numerous awards over the years cementing Maltnhops as a serious player in the craft beer scene. The goods are available via their online store as well as stockists up the East Coast from Sydney all the way up to Cairns.

Known for their playful approach to beer, the team isn’t afraid to push boundaries, often experimenting with bold flavours like their Peanut Butter & Jam stout, whilst also perfecting more traditional styles like the American West Coast IPA.

The venue itself, with its inviting industrial aesthetic, has become a favourite local watering hole allowing visitors to get up close with the brewing process. With 11 taps offering both their core range alongside limited release beers, there’s always something new to try.

Guests can enjoy a tasting paddle, crispy pizza, live music, ever-changing food specials, and new beer releases every six to eight weeks all whilst watching the brewery in full swing.

When it comes to favourites, the team each has their own go-to brew. For Cam, it’s the Dark Ale, which has evolved over the years but still retains the rich, roasted malt flavours he loves.

Phil’s pick is the West Coast IPA, a balanced hoppy beer that’s not too fruity. And for Sam, it’s the Hops on Ice Cold IPA.

However, the brewery’s most popular beer by far is their core range NEIPA. Its big, juicy traits and lower bitterness make it a crowd-pleaser, even for those who typically shy away from IPAs.

The team is eager to expand the brand outside the Hunter region, the sights set on Sydney and beyond. But never fear, no matter how far they grow, the heart of Maltnhops will always be in Newcastle.

Whether you’re a seasoned beer enthusiast or just looking for a welcoming place to enjoy a pint, Maltnhops Brewhaus invites you in for a beer.
