Lambton's First Light cafe is bringing new purpose to a much-loved heritage space
Few community spaces in Newcastle carry as much layered history as Lambton Park. A place where sport, leisure, heritage and daily life have quietly overlapped for generations.
Now, one of Lambton Park's most familiar buildings is stepping into a new era, with the opening of First Light cafe bringing fresh energy to a site that has long been part of the suburb’s rhythm.

A community landmark reimagined
Originally constructed in the 1940s as a baby health centre, the building has been carefully transformed by the City of Newcastle into a contemporary cafe space, supported by a $1 million grant through the NSW Government’s Crown Reserves Improvement Fund.

The First Light cafe officially opened its doors to the local community in April 2026, marking the completion of a long-awaited project that balances the building’s heritage with a renewed focus on community use.
City of Newcastle director Kathleen Hyland described the space as a “cherished community hub,” saying, “This building has played an important role in the Lambton community for generations. Now we have invested in its revitalisation to transform it into an inclusive cafe space that welcomes and caters for people of all ages.”
A space designed for the community
Walk through the park gate off Elder Street and you’ll find the thoughtfully restored heritage building nestled amongst Lambton Park’s lively grounds, surrounded by the tennis courts, local pool, and open green space.

External and internal restorations highlight subtle architectural details, preserving its original character. Stained glass transom windows line the red-brick exterior, while new additions like fluted glass doors and a front takeaway window give the space a distinctly fresh, modern feel.
Inside, natural light reflects off freshly painted white walls, with eclectic, bright furniture set around recycled-plastic tabletops from @resourcefulliving. Timber floors add warmth, creating a space that feels both contemporary and inviting.

The layout is designed to suit all types of visitors, with bench seating, power access points and a large communal table supporting everything from quick coffees to longer work catch-ups and family meetups.

Little ones aren’t left out, with a corner dedicated to toys and colouring books keeping them entertained while parents enjoy a cuppa.
Outside, picnic tables sit beneath the canopy of Lambton Park, while bar seating on the front porch offers a quiet nook to pause. At the rear, the deck overlooks the adjacent playground, making First Light a natural stop for families, walkers and locals passing through.

A ramp ensures pram and wheelchair access, embedding inclusivity into the building’s design rather than treating it as an afterthought.
With the City of Newcastle council continuing upgrades to the adjacent playground, the refreshed play space is set to reopen soon, adding another family-friendly drawcard just steps from the cafe.

Minister for the Hunter Yasmin Catley highlighted the community focus of the renovations, saying, “We’re making smart use of what’s already here, preserving the character and history of the area while strengthening community connection.”
A hospitality team rooted in Newcastle
Behind First Light is a trio of familiar names in Newcastle hospitality: Angelo Luczak (coffee), Luke Marshall (operations), and Corey Park-Pearson (food and menu direction), alongside head chef Larry Woodcock, who brings a strong local pedigree with experience across The Edwards, Moor and Wil & Sons.

Corey Park-Pearson said the early response from locals has already set the tone.
“We’ve been blown away by the community reaching out – even through the construction fencing – sharing stories about the building when it was the baby health centre,” he said. “There’s a real sense of connection to this place already.”
What’s on the menu
Coffee is led by Newcastle's Floozy Coffee Roasters, featuring the Lucky Stars blend alongside batch brew, cold brew and sparkling cold brew options. Matcha also features prominently, including Raw Nutrition matcha served hot or iced, plus a raspberry matcha variation.

The food menu balances cafe classics with a few elevated favourites. Breakfast highlights include mushrooms on toast with black garlic and haloumi, smoky BBQ baked beans with chorizo, confit potato hash, and a loaded sourdough muffin with chorizo sausage, hash brown and hot honey.

For lunch, be sure to try the First Light Smash Burger, featuring double Black Angus brisket patties, American cheese and house burger sauce. If you're grabbing something to go before a walk through the park, the haloumi and egg roll with avocado and mojo mayo or the Japanese-style egg sando are ideal takeaway options.

A new local favourite in Lambton
First Light marks a quiet but meaningful shift in how Lambton Park is experienced day-to-day.
For its team, the vision is simple: a place that meets people at their pace. “We want First Light to be a welcoming space for the community to gather,” Angelo Luczak said. “And we’re excited to add to the vibrancy of Lambton.”

Open daily from 7am to 5pm, First Light is set to become a go-to for morning coffees, park-side catch-ups and slow afternoons spent amongst the greenery.
With a restored heritage building, community-focused atmosphere and upgraded playground soon to reopen next door, it’s set to become a new favourite for Lambton locals and a fresh spot for the wider Newcastle community to discover.
