Discover Wollombi’s General Store, where fresh flavours meet timeless charm
Slowing down these days feels somewhat of a luxury, and with our lives moving at such a fast pace, it’s reassuring to know there are still places you can visit that allow you to take a step back, and slow time.
It’s even more refreshing to know that a place like this exists only an hour and a half drive from Newcastle, and it’s called Wollombi.

The history of Wollombi began with Aboriginal peoples, with the name "Wollombi" derived from an Aboriginal word meaning "meeting place". In the 1830s European settlement saw the town become a commercial centre for the Great North Road, however, once steamships came into play, Wollombi quickly became a relatively isolated rural village.

Whilst this change would have been significant for those living in the town at the time, it’s this shift that actually helped preserve Wollombi’s rich history, its gorgeous heritage buildings, and the community’s vibrant energy.
And standing at the centre of all this history is none other than the Wollombi General Store.

Purchased in May 2025 by Matthew Low and Michael Edwards, the couple were more than familiar with the area. Growing up in the Hunter Valley, Michael's first role as a General Manager was at Peppers Convent, and later the couple invested in the area, purchasing the highly sought after wedding venue, Redleaf.

Having fallen in love with the Wollombi area, and the town’s special character, Matt and Michael made the decision to take on the heritage-listed building, as Matt explains,
“The building has such a great frame to work with, we didn’t want to really change anything, nor would you want to. You can’t build this kind of character, a tidy up is the best way to describe what we’ve done so far.”

“It had been for sale for quite a long time, and with it being such a significant asset to the village we wanted to ensure its legacy continued.”
Matt admits it’s been a wild ride, however the community support has been outstanding,
“We’ve got some great staff on board, and we hope people are enjoying it.

“It did feel like the expectations were high when we took it on, and it’s been a big project. We still need to finesse areas of the business, and ultimately answer the question of, what does a General Store actually mean these days? And how can we support the community, both local, and visitors, so it’s a matter of finding that right balance.”
So what can you expect on a visit to the General Store at Wollombi? To put it simply, there’s a lot.
The home style hearty menu features a range of soups, salads, and salad rolls, meat pies, and a beautiful range of sweets and slices make up the menu.

Then there’s the silky smooth gelato that’s whipped before your eyes, the coconut gave some definite pina colada vibes.

Before you head off to explore the rest of Wollombi Village, and yes you could easily fill in half a day here, you first must take a wander about the store which houses your everyday essentials, including the mail, and browse the collection of vintage items, some of which are for sale.

A general store in every sense of the word, for Matt and Michael, the General Store isn’t just a business, it’s about breathing new life into an icon while preserving the charm that makes Wollombi so special.
