When you’re on a budget here are some places to have lunch or dinner in the Hunter Valley

We hear you. You love going to the Hunter Valley but sometimes, you need to do it on a budget. Whether that’s because you want to splurge on ALL the wine, you visit on the reg (and every trip can’t be a five star extravaganza) or you are trying to stick to your new year's resolution and save money - sometimes you’ve just got to find some more affordable ways to have a good time.

Well HUNTERhunter. has done some digging and put together this list of cafes and restaurants to save you a whole lot of searching.

Note: Some places listed have a whole menu of affordable options whilst others have a selection of affordable meals.

Two Fat Blokes Gourmet Kitchen
This little café is a great stop if you’re looking for something a little more affordable. It has a relaxed atmosphere with both indoor and outdoor seating available.

Open: Lunch Wednesday - Sunday.
Where: 691 Hermitage Rd, Pokolbin NSW, 2320.
Prices: Toasted ruben sandwich $10, burgers from $20 (vegetarian or chicken options), and up to $32 for Braised Beef Cheek.

Oishii Japanese and Thai Cuisine
If you feel like a spot of Asian fare whilst you’re in the vineyards, Oishii has some great affordable meal options. Located at Roche Estate, it is nice and central to many popular activities and cellar doors.

Keep an eye out for the daily specials which are often $14 like the Satay Chicken with rice. You won’t get much cheaper than that in the Hunter Valley.

Prices: Lunch special for $14. Hokkien noodles with meat and vegetable from $19.50, Teppan Yaki bbq with stir fried vege and miso soup $22.90, up to $27.50 for red wine duck.

Andante Brasserie
Andante Brasserie is located in the heart of Pokolbin in the grounds of the Leisure Inn. It is a very casual, low key restaurant and ticks the box when you’re looking for something cheaper. It has a good range on the menu with all round affordable options.

Open: Lunch and dinner 7 days a week.
Where: 485 McDonalds Road, Pokolbin NSW, 2320.
Prices: Burgers from $14, Salt and Pepper Squid $18, and up to $26 for a scotch fillet.

Harrigans Hunter Valley
Harrigans is in central Pokolbin, adjacent to the Hunter Valley Gardens, so pretty convenient if you are doing many of the main attractions in the Hunter Valley. It wasn’t long renovated so the undercover courtyard is a nice place to hang out. There are indoor seating options as well.

Open: Lunch and dinner 7 days a week.
Where: 2090 Broke Rd, Pokolbin NSW, 2320.
Prices: Salads from $21, pizzas, a burger or bangers and mash from $24, and up to $46 for Short Rib and Wings Combo.

Harrigans Bistro Hunter Valley

Brokenback Bar
Located at Estate Tuscany, the Brokenback Bar is a good casual option and has a broad range of food that seems fairly priced for the Hunter Valley. It has a range of seating options including small tables and lounges indoors or tables on the undercover balcony.

Open: Lunch and dinner 7 days a week.
Where: Corner of Hermitage road and Mistletoe Lane, Pokolbin NSW, 2320.
Prices: Pizzas from $18 (Margherita), nepalese chicken dumplings $18, home made gnocchi $23, and up to $26 for the beer battered fish and chips.

Brokenback Bar, Estate Tuscany

Fawk Foods Kitchen and Bakery
Located at Pokolbin Village shops, right near Hope and Roche Estates, this is another conveniently located lunch and snack spot. With their all day (8am - 2pm) menu and daily baked goods on offer, there is sure to be something to tickle your fancy.

Open: Lunch 7 days a week.
Where: Pokolbin Village, 2188 Broke Rd, Pokolbin NSW, 2320.
Prices: Nourish bowl or pasta of the day $22, lamb burger $24, and up to $28 for a slow roast lamb shoulder.

Fawk Foods Kitchen and Bakery

Baume Restaurant
Baume is a large restaurant with a substantial menu to match. Many of the meals are perfect for sharing from house made pizzas, to starters such as arancini and mains like the pan seared Bavette steak.

Open: Lunch 7 days and Dinner Thursday - Monday.
Where: 119 McDonald Road, Pokolbin NSW, 2320.
Prices: Pizza and pasta from $28, and up to $46 (or $23 pp) for a shared main such as Twice Cooked Pork Belly.

Other Areas of the Hunter Valley
Leaves and Fishes
In what is one of the most tranquil of settings Leaves and Fishes also happens to have one of the most tastiest of menus that is loaded with seafood and is still within reach of even the most smallest of budgets. 

Open: 11am - 5pm, Thursday - Monday
Where: 737 Lovedale Road, Lovedale NSW, 2320
Prices: Meals range from $6, house-made chips and aioli, up to $24 for fresh Australian king prawns served in their shell, aioli and lemon. There's loads of seafood for you to choose from as well as other menu favs including buttermilk fried chicken tenders with roti bread, gochujang mayo, lime $22.

Wollombi Tavern
If you enjoy a no frills country experience, than Wollombi Tavern is perfect. This traditional country pub even has the authentic country pub frontage. Walk through this into the main bar and you can’t but help appreciate its historic rawness with the stone fireplace and wooden interior. Grab a seat on the wrap around country verandah or down on the grassed lawn.

Open: Lunch 7 days a week. Dinner Friday and Saturday.
Where: 2994 Great North Road, Wollombi NSW, 2325.
Prices: $10 weekday lunch specials. Burgers without chips from $7.80, add chips for $4, battered fish or schnitzel with chips for $19.50, and up to $25.50 for a rump steak. Note: Friday and Saturday night menu may be slightly more expensive.

Huntlee Tavern Bistro, Branxton
A new pub to the area, Huntlee Tavern Bistro has a large range of pub meals for lunch and dinner.

Open: Lunch and Dinner 7 days a week.
Where: 3 Empire Street, Branxton NSW, 2335.
Prices: Salads from $17, burgers and pasta from $18, pizza from $22, and up to $45 for Huntlee Tavern Sticky Spiced Full Rack BBQ Pork Ribs.

Lovedale Smokehouse Café
This one is a great little find, so we are excited to include this on our list. The café specialises in, yes you guessed it - smoked meats, and includes affordable lunch options like the slow hickory smoked pulled pork burger for $22. There are both indoor and outdoor seating options with plenty of space for the kids to run around on the lawn.

Open: Lunch Thursday - Monday.
Where: 64 Majors Lane, Lovedale NSW, 2320.
Prices: Smoky Beef and Bean Nachos for $20, burgers for $22, and up to $30 for Hickory Smoked Baby Back Pork Ribs.
