A major showcase of Hunter artists arrives at MRAG
The Hunter's landscapes, waterways, and communities are taking centre stage at Maitland Regional Art Gallery as Upriver Downriver returns for the second Hunter Biennale, bringing together more than 40 artists in one of the region's largest contemporary art exhibitions.
From July 11 to October 11, Upriver Downriver will transform every gallery space at Maitland Regional Art Gallery into a celebration of the Hunter's people, places, and creative spirit.
Following the success of its inaugural exhibition in 2023, the Hunter Biennale returns with an ambitious exhibition spanning the entire Maitland Regional Art Gallery.
At the heart of Upriver Downriver is the Hunter River – the waterway that has shaped the region for generations. Visitors are invited to journey from the Upper Hunter through Maitland and along to the Port of Newcastle, discovering how artists interpret the landscapes, histories and communities connected by the river.

Featuring works by more than 40 Hunter-based artists, the exhibition showcases an extraordinary breadth of creative practice, from painting and sculpture to installation, textiles, photography and mixed media.
Among the featured artists is Maitland-born multidisciplinary artist Nell, whose work The NELL ANNE QUILT features embroidered patches created by 441 people around the world, each honouring an important woman in their lives. The collaborative artwork reflects both personal storytelling and community connection – themes that resonate throughout the exhibition.
Other exhibiting artists include James Drinkwater, Lottie Consalvo, Dani Marti, Izabela Pluta, Richard Tipping, Kimberly Swan, Todd Fuller, Tom Ireland, Belinda Street, Helen Hopcroft, Mitch Mahoney, and many more, highlighting the diversity and strength of artistic talent across the Hunter.
Whether you're a regular gallery visitor or simply looking for a new way to experience the region, Upriver Downriver offers a rare opportunity to explore the Hunter through the eyes of the artists who call it home.
The exhibition will officially launch with a public opening celebration at 5:30pm on Friday, July 24.
