Sydney Travelling Film Festival returns to Newcastle

Travelling Film Festival is returning to Newcastle this August, bringing a weekend of Australian and international cinema to Event Cinemas Kotara.

From Friday, 7 August to Sunday, 9 August, Travelling Film Festival Newcastle will screen nine feature films across one big weekend of cinema.

Australia’s longest-running travelling film festival, Travelling Film Festival brings Australian and international features, documentaries, and short films to regional audiences across the country.

Founded by David Stratton AM in 1974, the festival is all about giving regional audiences the chance to experience films they may not otherwise get to see on the big screen.

The Newcastle program opens on Friday night with Whistle, an offbeat Australian documentary following the world’s greatest whistling competition.

Across the weekend, audiences can also catch films including Silent Friend, starring Tony Leung Chiu-wai and Léa Seydoux; Rose, featuring Berlinale Silver Bear winner Sandra Hüller; Fjord, from Palme d’Or-winning director Cristian Mungiu; and The History of Concrete, a Sundance 2026 title from the mind behind How To with John Wilson.

Sunday’s program includes Cannes Camera d’Or winner Ben’Imana, Cannes Grand Prix and Sydney Film Prize winner Minotaur, Afghan political romantic comedy No Good Men, and acclaimed Korean drama The World of Love.
