The headlining act... Newcastle Art Gallery presents WE CAN BE HEROES: a backstage pass, a behind the scenes tour of intimate moments of Australian and international musicians.

WE CAN BE HEROES: a backstage pass

Viewed through the lens of four leading Australian music photographers - Charlie Hardy, Maclay Heriot, Sophie Howarth and Luke Kellett, WE CAN BE HEROES: a backstage pass celebrates the connection and relationship between the photographer and their subject with the exhibition showcasing acts from the 70’s through to the contemporary heroes of today.

In addition to featuring well-known artists such as Dave Grohl, David Bowie, Boy and Bear, The Beatles, The Prodigy, Violent Soho, You Am I and many more. The exhibition takes visitors into the epicentre of festivals such as Austin City Limits, Big Day Out, and Lollapalooza.

Hour of Power

Rock on with homegrown locals to international superstars like David Bowie, Grinspoon, Iggy Pop, Midnight Oil, Nick Cave, Paul Dempsey and more while you browse the Newcastle Art Gallery's summer exhibition WE CAN BE HEROES: a backstage pass with a specially curated Spotify playlist playing throughout the exhibition to amp up your browsing experience.

Live Q&A Conversation Series

To bring the visuals to life and hear all those backstage stories you can join a live Q&A via the Gallery's Instagram channel. WE CAN BE HEROES: a backstage pass exhibiting artists Charlie Hardy, Maclay Heriot, Sophie Howarth and Luke Kellett will be hosting the chats speaking with renowned Australian musicians.

Join our host Phil Jamieson as he talks with curatorial advisor and exhibiting artist Luke Kellett on all things music and art. Followed by a live acoustic show from local garage rock legends and exhibition subjects  Flight to Dubai, as well as candid conversation around music, life on the road, and the hard slog to the top. Snap up some goodies from pop-up stalls and discover an array of local music merch for sale, including wares from Newcastle Music Collective, plus more. Capacity to the event will be limited. Teen Masterclass with local artist Rosie Turner

Unleash your inner creative and delve into the amazing world of ink on paper in a special masterclass just for teens. Newcastle multidisciplinary artist and painter Rosie Turner will guide participants through the process of creating a series of iconic rock symbols inspired by the exhibition WE CAN BE HEROES: a backstage pass.

WE CAN BE HEROES: Live with Paul Dempsey

To mark the closing weekend of WE CAN BE HEROES: a backstage pass, Newcastle Art Gallery and New Annual present an intimate gig with featured exhibition subject and renowned Australian musician Paul Dempsey. 

In this one of a kind acoustic performance, Dempsey will share his own stories from life on the stage and his career spanning more than 25 years. Tackling subject matters beyond the realm of rock n roll, Dempsey’s songs explore everything from the existential angst of artificial intelligence to the possibility of apocalyptic romance - ensuring he is never predictable.

Children can get creative every Saturday for two sessions of free art-making activities. Led by Gallery educators, the program is designed to engage participants through discussion and hands-on activities which can be simplified or made more complex to suit everyone in the family.
