It’s hard to know what’s open and where you can go with the kids these school holidays. But this list brings together all the happenings across Newcastle, Hunter Valley, Port Stephens, and the Central Coast. Our biggest advice? Plan and book ahead!

Super Sneaky Science | 12, 14, 19, & 21 Jan
Join our scientists for some fantastic pop-up science at Newcastle Museum!  No bookings required, just come and find us roaming around in the Museum – we’ll be loud and colourful and having lots of fun with hands-on science.  There’ll be slime, eyeballs, rockets, prisms, squid and more!

Learn about the world’s first photographic process in this hands-on workshop. Learn about light and explore where art meets science as you create your very own unique cyanotype artworks.

Head along to either the Newcastle or Central Coast Location and experience the iconic Australian bush like never before. Hunter Wetlands Centre

Can’t get the kids to stop climbing? Head to the indoor rock-climbing space, Pulse Climbing. With two locations in Newcastle; Adamstown and Warners Bay, as well as one on the Central Coast at Gosford.

Newcastle Art Gallery
The Newcastle Art Gallery has re-opened to visitors with separate, two-hour daily sessions, with sessions from 10am to 1pm and 2pm to 5pm. Alternatively, join a Newcastle Art Gallery Educator for a free 30-minute online class using materials from around the home. Developed for primary-aged children, these free webinars are designed to stimulate playful art making possibilities.

Blackbutt Reserve
some emu food from the kiosk, talk a stroll along the boardwalk, grab a picnic basket or just go wild in the playground. For the more adventurous why not take a hike on one of the many walking trails.

Maitland Gaol
Is open with their self-guided audio tours. Alternatively, head online and let the kids explore the gaol’s rich history with help from their online mascot; Snitch’s Spot!

The Central Coast reptile park has reopened! Enjoy live entertaining shows, themed exhibits and behind the scenes tours. Learn about conservation work and their lifesaving snake and spider venom collection work!

Sandboarding on Stockton Dunes
Get the adrenaline pumping and sandboard down Stockton sand dunes. It’s a great experience for the whole family and the Sand Safari team are operating six separate sessions every Saturday and Sunday.
