The inaugural Newcastle Podcast Festival launches | 19 - 21 February

Launching in February over 3 big days Newcastle Podcast Festival is bringing some of the most advanced podcasting minds from Australia to the city.

As awareness of podcasting and the rate of consumption continues to grow globally, and with advertising revenues projected to surpass USD$1 billion by 2021. Hundreds of millions of dollars are being spent in the space by tech giants and big corporates alike, and with over 800,000 podcasts to choose from, podcasting is now mainstream.

Festival Director Melanie Sargeant has worked with some of the biggest brands on air during her time at Nova 969, B105, Nova 919, Nova 937, 2DAY and locally at New Fm. Mel is now an impassioned Podcaster with a vision to help Novocastrians creative inspiring and successful Podcasts of their own.

Podcasting has increased our capacity to tell engaging stories and to effect other’s lives through acting as a teacher and mentor across many aspects of life. Rich soundscapes can evoke emotion and its intimate form can make a podcast highly engaging. Explore the podcast’s capacity to tell a story and become a teacher.

Monetising Your Podcast
There are many and varied ways to make money from your Podcast. You can have sponsors, referrals, selling your own service or products, listener donations, live events and more. Your Podcast can become a job of course and if your content is good enough people will want to pay to be affiliated with it or for it to ensure you continue to create good content. Featuring CEO of OMNY Studios Sharon Taylor, Melanie Sargeant and other podcasts who have monetised their content.

Newcastle Podcast Festival is excited to be able to honour those working hard to produce incredible podcast content that’s enriching people’s lives and informing and entertaining them. Newcastle Podcast Festival will be honouring many different podcasters across various categories at the Newcastle Podcast Festival Awards.

School Workshops
Newcastle Storytellers
In this workshop, we look at our lives and stories that stand out and why they sound out for us. We then discuss the art of verbal storytelling, the rollercoaster of emotion and a beginning, a middle and an end. We then form groups and workshop a story per group. Each group heads into Newcastle Libraries podcast studio and record some stories in groups.

Professional Podcasters of the Future
We workshop all our different interests then create a theoretical podcast about a subject they were passionate about. We then form groups based on similar interests and create a theoretical podcast about a subject they are passionate about.

We then workshop how they could connect with brands that would work with their content and discuss monetising content in a meaningful way. As well as writing some copy for advertising in the podcast. We then produce them in groups.

Provoking Change through Podcasting
There are many things to be passionate about in today’s world and people worldwide are effecting change through podcasting. In this workshop we look at those provoking change through podcast and discuss the issues that we’re passionate about and how we’d go about creating a podcast to effect change in a chosen area.
