What's On

Watch Newcastle come alive during this month-long live painting event

A huge month of art is coming to Newcastle this spring, and it’s completely free to get involved.

Launching on Friday September 1, EASEL’D is bringing 100 artists together with local shops, cafes, and bars to paint outdoor spaces, portable walls, and businesses themselves across a jam-packed month.

Expect four artist residency walking trails, two live paint jams, workshops, a talk with local artist Keob, and even an accompanying podcast series.

As part of EASEL’D, artists will embark on mini residencies in Newcastle’s shops, cafes, and bars. These residencies will happen each Saturday in September (except September 30), and will form a walking trail through different parts of the city, allowing visitors to discover not only new favourite artists, but new shops and spots to eat too.

One of these walking trails is taking place on the evening of Saturday September 16th, covering some iconic businesses in Newcastle’s east. From 4pm-7pm, Catherine Lalevée will be popping up at Novotel Newcastle Beach, Belinda Dorey will be in residence at Customs House, you’ll find Constance Mcinerney at The Ship Inn, and Joey Davis will be painting at Blue Kahunas

Stop in at these venues for a glimpse into each artist’s practice – you’ll be able to meet them, watch them work, and discover Newcastle through their creative lens.

For more information on the artist residency walking trails and more events happening throughout the month, visit the EASEL’D website.

There’s so much to see and do during EASEL’D – it’s a great way to get outside with the family and support both local artists and businesses. Whether you stop by to watch an artist at work or participate in a workshop, there’s something for people of all ages to enjoy.
