Learn to surf on the Barrington Coast

If you’re a little hesitant and prefer a more one-on-one approach, Saltwater Surf School in Old Bar is a great way to combine a weekend getaway with learning a new salty skill.
Vincent Primel is the surf coach behind Saltwater Surf School and a pro at making learning to surf a whole lot of fun.
Growing up in France, Vincent has spent his life chasing the waves and for a number of years travelled the globe on the circuit.
Whilst he may not be competitively surfing anymore, for more than 20 years Vincent has been living on the Barrington Coast, and along with being one half of Finn's at Old Bar, Vincent splits his time between his Saltwater Surf School and heading overseas to coach up-and-coming surfers to get circuit ready.
Suitable for kids as young as 5 and adults of any age, once you've signed up to your Saltwater Surf School lesson the destination is always an unknown until the morning of, with Vincent heading to wherever the best conditions take him.
On this occasion it was Old Bar Beach, and after we suited up Vincent sat us on the beach to talk through some sand surfing skills, and general beach knowledge.
Before we take to the boards, we head out into the waves for some body surfing action, with Vincent explaining this helps to get a feel for the motion of the waves. After 4 or 5 body waves it was time to hit the surf on the board.
The pristine waters, and small swell makes for a perfect training ground, and for the next hour your time is spent in the waves mastering the art of surfing. Along the way Vincent offers up a whole bunch of handy pointers and encouragement to ensure even for the most uncoordinated of humans to start standing up and surfing!!
With your equipment provided, all you need to bring are your swimmers, towel and an I-can-stand-up attitude.
