For the first time since Newcastle train station closed at the end of 2014, The Station will be opened once again to the public mid-year.

Revitalising Newcastle Program Director and CEO of Hunter Development Corporation (HDC) Michael Cassel explains, "Renew Newcastle is on board, they will be holding the events and managing the place for the first 18 months.

The Station

"Those 18 months are really about trialling what works here, Renew [Newcastle] are very experienced in work around the city and reactivating spaces and we will watch with interest.

"The activation of the site will give us a strong idea of what works at The Station and will better inform its long-term use.

"The Station offers Newcastle the opportunity to create a platform for new experiences, products, and services that will promote the Hunter region and orientate people when they visit."

The Station

HDC has worked with a local agency, Talk To Bec to brand 'The Station', drawing inspiration from some of the site's architectural heritage.

The Station

"It's based on what the community told us they wanted."

And Cassel reassures us, "There is definitely disruption at this point in time, that disruption will become less and less as we move our way through. We are underway with the riskiest work being the sewer at this point in time. Once that sewer is done you will start to see a lot more progress on opening roads back up".
