Sitting pretty on Newcastle's Market Street Lawn since 1936, The Signal Box is about to undergo an almighty revamp with construction already underway.
Officially closing on December 26, 2014, The Signal Box has remained a fixture on the Newcastle streetscape with the heritage building standing as a blank
canvas waiting to be brought back to life, and what a life it’s about to receive.
With new owners Andrew and Emily Macdonald, who you may know from The Little Nel in Nelson Bay, announcing late last year that they have taken on the lease, this week renders were released revealing what we can expect to see come
Whilst The Signal Box building will remain as it is today some exciting additions will be taking shape over the coming months to the exterior of the building, with Emily explaining,
“The actual Signal Box itself will be transformed into the kitchen and front of house area, and construction is about to begin to the exterior of the building with a glass structure being erected to create our main seated area.”
“We are working with Jason Elsley from Derive Architecture, who has been fantastic, and has really helped us to merge the concept of creating a lovely
modern industrial space with this beautiful heritage building.”
As a part of their pitch to seal the deal, Andrew and Emily had a clear vision of retaining the history of the building. In addition to becoming one of Newcastle's most stunning dining venues, the second level of The Signal Box will remain as the original Signal Box, levers and all, and will be open to the public to explore as a tribute to the buildings past.
With plans to open in time for Spring, there is a lot of work to be done but Emily is confident they will be trading for when the warmer months return.
As for what will be on the menu, The Signal Box will be keeping in tune with The Little Nel, for those not familiar with this delicious café you can expect to see Chef Dan James working with only the freshest of ingredients and a few more seafood ingredients as a perfect complement to their incredible location.
With the plan being to open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, be sure to keep your eye on its progress as it’s going to be this Spring and Summers hot spot to dine at.
